i am beaten. defeated. knocked down. for tonight.

so i bought an ro/di system, great references, good price, great deal. had it shipped two weeks ago, recieved it in a timely fashion, opened it, and it was broken. called the company, sent it back at their expense, had it shipped back to me with extra filters, recieved it today. opened it, everything is in tact, looks great, just waiting for water. bring it home, set it all up, run downtown to the homedepot, buy a self tapping saddle valve, get everything ready up to the point that i can tap the hole and let the water flow!!

NOPE! finally get the valve to the point that it won't turn anymore, back it off, no water. try again, same. again, same. again, same. alright i tried to use extra force.

broke the friggin thing. and they cost 7 beans here in the expensive apple...

so tired. all i want is my ro system. finally have it here, and i can't use it!!

any suggestions? anyone know of a valve that is really really tough? i think i have really thick walled pipes. and yes they are copper pipes. i thought the same thing. but alas they are. i need to be able to punch the hole and disconnect the unit with no worries....

If its copper there's a fair chance you have the thicker walled copper tubing. In any case what i have for mine isn't a self tapping bit, but actually just something you screw on the end of the water pipe where the faucet tube hooks up, then the faucet hose hooks on the end, and it tees off to the RO unit, might want to look for something like that instead..

If not.. just get a drill and give the self tap a little goose :D

If you have copper pipes you can just take the valve off and replace it with a double valve. 3/8 for the water faucet and 1/4 for the RO. check to see if it has the compression fittings before you leave the store. It should work like a charm

I just got mine last weekend, and I was worried about the same type of problems. My unit came with a hose adapter so I bought a Y adapter with valves on each output. Hooked it up to my washer cold line, washer side of the Y is always open, and the output to the RO/DI is controlled by the valve. Much to my surprise it works great. Might work for you if convenient. The Y adapter was 3.00 at the HS.

I hate those self tapping saddle valves. I think they are cheap pieces of ....

I would cut the pipe and sweat a fitting in there, but an even easier but more expensive route is to cut the pipe and put a compression Tee in there.

That way there is no solder involved, you get the thing right where you want it, and its take-apart-able.

Course if you are already near the end of a pipe, like near the washer or sink, then just follow the advice above....
