Have a 80 gallon with a DIY sump, 20 gallon high tank. The wife does not like the noise that the water makes coming down from the overflow and passing through the filter and bio balls. any recommendation as to how to quiet the "waterfall" noise? Thanks.

Do a search for "durso stand pipe".
You make it out of a few PVC parts, and it goes a long way in quieting your overflow.

I have one in my overflow that leads to my bio-ball area, it works well.

If the noise is coming from the overflow, the durso standpipe will fix it. If the noise is from the trickling water over the bio balls, you can get rid of the bio balls and plumb the water so it exits an inch or two below the sump's water level.

Buy your wife a nice piece of jewelry too. It won't quiet the sump up, but it'll probably work for your wife.

Sure. A nice lead Durso would be better, but PVC can work if you're willing to put some elbow grease into it.*
