Is this pump safe?

I was able to get a couple of Iwaki pumps off E-bay for dirt cheap, I mean CHEAP!! Only problem is I have no idea of the history of these pumps. And the seller is a recycler who bought a large lot and is reselling them. No way to know what liquid these pumps pushed. I want to assume that Iwaki uses parts that will not absorb what ever fluids it is pushing, is that a safe assumption? How can I go about ensuring they are safe? I was thinking about mixing up 10 gallons and have the pump run on that for a day or two then test it. But what am I testing for since it could have been any liquid used.

Smell em?

People do strange things, I would take the cover off and inspect inside if that is possible.

Then a good cleaning with vinegar and water and try it out....

Iwakis are chemically resistant, but there is always a chance of residue. Vinegar rinsing and soaking with hydrogen peroxide should help. Running it on the closed loop of FW is a good idea.

I'd soak the parts in muratic acid and water also.

I just could not pass up $10 Iwaki pumps. There are MD20's but I can use them for that price.
