I came across this "wet pet" concept in a cichlid forum... It's basically when you have a tank dedicated to a single, large inhabitant, due to size, compatability, or simply by choice.

For example, there are some large fish (A foot long +, for example) that one may choose to house in a 75 gal tank, exclusive of any other inhabitants. That fish is then considered a "wet pet". :)

Any similar reef wet pet keepers here? The pet doesn't necessarily have to be a fish, it could be a clam, an anemone, etc.

I considered this for a puffer fish. I think a dog faced puffer would make a great wet pet.

People also do this with mantis shrimp don't they?

Come to think of it, I have a wet pet right now. I have a 10 gallon with nothing in it but a striped damsel. Not a single other living thing. Does that make the little bugger a wet pet?

Nope, but I have considered a small cube tank with 1 head of coral and 1 type of small fish. Not sure how that would look. I did at one time have an oscar in a tank all by itself.

I'd say so. :)

It's kind of funny, when I think of a single very large fish in a normal-sized aquarium, it seems like one of those floating heads.

I once had a 265g tank devoted to two LARGE Pacu. They are now at my local zoo's aquarium. 3' long 2' tall and almost a foot wide when I donated them. The zoo came and got them and used one 60 gallon rubber made tub for each.

I might do this in the future with a dog faced puffer. My wife wanted to do it, but I don't have the space for another large tank.

The one at my LFS comes to the surface for you to pet him. He looks so damn smart too and follows people by the tank looking for attention.

Not yet but the idea of a 29 high or 30 set up with a snowflake eel is very very tempting to me.

A few really nice rocks set up as caves and a snowflake, toss in one or two corals...mmm wheres my credit card...

I saw this in a Oriental restaurant, they kept an arowana that was 44 inches long. It was in a 55 gallon tank. I laughed. Then I felt sorry for it.

Thats why I donated my Pacu to the zoo. They now call a 10,000g tank home. My 265 was to small for them they could barely turn around.

Its hard to imagen when they are the size of a quater getting so big. I have seen them about 1 foot and 5 inches long, but no bigger than that.

Whats their max size? What did you feed him?

You must have owned a small goldfish farm.

Well maybe 3' was an over exagration. more like 2 1/2' maybe a little less. They were the lager of the Pacu species ( black finned Pacu). they grow VERY fast and VERY large and VERY heavy. I estimate each one was around 45-50 lbs or so. 1' foot wide was definately an exageration LOL! More like 6"-7" thick I think? BUt after a good meal thier bellies were VERY close to a foot wide! LOL! Max size is said to be aproximately 3 foot.
They are mainly vegetarian. They wouldnt eat a guppy. ( well maybe a guppy LOL!)
I fed them different items through out the week: 1 half a lettuce head, 1/2 pound of carrot sticks, Small children ( NOT! LOL), Green peppers
( YEP they ate 'em! :) ) vitamin enriched large cichlid pellets, peas, cellary, apples, grapes, zuccini, Brazill nuts ( YEP they eat those too! LOL!) to keep thier teeth healthy and trimmed.
Once in a while i would feed them beef heart soley for its nutrient content and protiens. Like I said they are mainly veg-heads and will not hunt out other fish, BUT they will eat anything "YOU" place in the tank and offer as food that is dead or a vegetable.

Feeding Pacu carrots is funny.

The pacu that was in the family would break them into little peices, and this made a fantastic popping noise in the tank!

My wet pet - had a single red bellied piranah in a 20g for close to 15 years before he sucumbed to some sort of tumor...

Worst part is that my wife (had this fish since the 7th grade) was not sad enough to see him go!
