i understand. i will pay for it in the long run anyway, so here is the question:

what brand do you have?

where did you get it?

how much did cost?

and why did you buy that one?

I have two RO/DIs. The one in my kitchen is for drinking/cooking and is really old. I got it locally at a store that sells water and water purification systems. I remember overpaying for it (something like $300 with drinking kit). This is my first RO system.

The other RO/DI is Captive Purity, bought at Marine Depot for about $150. I needed more RO water so I got this one. No real reason why I choose it above other brands/makes.

and what to look for in a system when buying one?
(hoping for a holiday present  )

i would need one gallon every two days, and ten gallons every seven days for top off and water changes...

Seriously, Ebay would be a good place to look. Look for a 4 stage unit.
Stage 1 Prefilter, Stage 2 Carbon Block, Stage 3 R.O. and stage 4 DI.
You can get clear or non clear canisters. Non clear are usually white or blue and the only draw back is that you wont be able to see the filters if you go non clear. This is simply a preference thing cause some try to judge when it's time for a filter change based on the look of the filter. This is pretty bogus since sight won't tell ya much. Just plan to change the first two filters every 6 months (prefilter and carbon block) this is a good PM to do to assure the RO membrane stays usable longer. its the most expensive part of the system and usually runs about 80.00 to replace. But given proper care (6 month filter changes) the membrane should last 3 to 5 years. Brands of filters seem to be a simple mater of preference also. What you want is to get a filter system that runs on standard 10" filters (pretty much all do) the Prefilter you use should be 1 micron and the carbon block should be .5 micron. Your new unit will probably come with a prefilter rated at 5 micron and carbon block at 1 micron. Use it for the first six month if you desire, then change to the lower microns on your first filter change. The new filters will equal what comes in the high end units sold under aquarium use systems, Kent, Spectrapure etc. The only other thing I can think of is to say make sure the RO membrane is a TFC membrane. The TFC membranes are standard in most all systems and are sorta universal use from a water supply stand point. Other membranes are either ment to run by well water only or other factors. TFC will work on any supply water.
As for the DI, You have a choice of refillable canisters or single use units. I went with Kent Marine's Di filter that changes color to show when it needs changed.

Also, Any unit higher than 4 stage is really not neccesary. all added filters above the 4 stage are repeat/redundent filters. Like 2 carbons, 2 DI. They suposedly extend the usable time before filter changes but they do not do anything more than what the 4 stage is doing. Maybe there might be a small increase in filtering but I doubt it. If water filters through a 1 micron filter then goes into another 1 micron filter, the output should still equal 1

got mine on ebay from filterdirect or something like that they resell for honeywell and watergeneral (2 big water type guys) i got the 6 stage with 5 gallon tank and nice sink dispenser and the di undersink dispenser so i could use it for everything i love it and i got it all for 110 bucks on ebay. they are a nice company i just call in and say send me filters and they show up. never had a problem and they include a tds meter with some of them and they have pumps and stuff if you have poor water pressure. very happy with it for what i paid for it. my water here is terrible and i go though filters alot you can see the differnce the water here is so bad. with the di water i can rinse off my car with no spots and my fish love it! i think it does 100 gpd if i let it run.... depends on membrane you get. good luck ! sorry if this gets long been a while since i posted :)

I was serious. eBay has the best deals on the some serious Reef RO/DI units.

I got a 6 stage 100 GPD RO unit with UV and I am adding a DI unit. It came with a 4 gallon reserve. I always have 4 gallons on hand...i dont have room for a 33 gallon trash can.

I got it brand new for 100 dollars + shipping. Well worth it.

It was "plug and play!"

I don't think there's a big difference between brands with similar features.

I got mine on ebay as well, about 70 shipped. It was a great deal from a new company. They sent it out pretty quick but it was missing 2 parts, they overnighted the parts to me and then sent me a free di filter for later. They are a very good company with great customer service. Call backs in minutes of emails and plenty of help hooking it up, basically it was a plug and play but I am no plumbing expert. Here is the set up I got.

Hope that helps. Great company.

Why's that, Guy?

The 35gpd, 50gpd, & 75gpd membranes reject 98% of impurities, higher for the Hi-S versions. The 100gpd rejects 90%, that's a 500% increase in impurities.

If you're also running a DI you can expect to have to replace the rosins 5 times as often. That will get expensive if your tap water is high in Phosphate or Silicates.

In my opinion if you need more than 75gpd then get a unit with dual 75gpd RO membranes for 150gpd.

I have heard rumor of a 100gpd membrane that filters 97% but I haven't seen it for sale anywhere.

why is that? i have assumed the opposite. i would have thought that the membrain would be thicker on a "higher gpd"?

how do you use these quote buttons?????

I own a 4 stage Oceanus and have added an in line TDS meter. The unit was $199. I am planning to add an additional DI filter.

I also agree with the above statement. After swapping out my membrane from a 50gpd to a 100gpd membrane the TDS meter reads higher entering the DI cartridge. I am now going through DI cartridges much faster. The worst part is they are fairly pricey.
