1.025 is excellent. It is right in the neighborhood of natural seawater. I keep my tank 1.025-1.027. 1.023 is the s.g. commonly quoted in old hobbyist books, and I'm not sure where this value originated.

Thanks Len- Actually It is Tongs in Fountain valley-A pretty reputable LFS-I just don't know why they would think 1.025 would be too high? They keep their coral tanks at 1.023 and their fish only at 1.019 why is that? does it have to do with less chance of sickness occuring?

I believe it does. My LFS keeps their acro tank at 1.026. I love it as it makes for real easy acclimation.

They may be following the instructions on the bags of salt. The last bag I bought had a cup that measured the salt for you. One level cupfull for 4 gallons of water at 1.023.

Now, that is freakin useless to me! I want 1.025 and I mix 5 gallons at a time....

When I lived in Ft Lauderdale, I measured the local seawater on occasion to see how it compared to my tank.
It was always between 1.030 and 1.032!
The books and hydrometers say 1.023-1.026 is best.
I measured my favorite LFS, and their water was about 1.025.
Same hydrometers were used for all.
I chose to go right in the middle between books and real life.
I kept my old 75g and now my new 10g at around 1.028. It seems to me to be doing just fine. All I have are starburst, zooanthid's, & shrooms (not counting the menagerie of mollusks & crustaceans) and all appear to be healthy and growing. Maybe other species will be more touchy about this, but I prefer to err on the side of higher than suggested, rather than lower, after seeing what NSW was at.

The latest book I've read- Julian Sprung's vol. 3- states Seawater ranges from 1.022-1.030 in most regions. His book has a table of the diff. levels in diff areas, with the Red Sea at 1.0299. he proposes for a marine tank the range to be 1.010-1.035, for a reef- 1.017-1.032. This is quite a wide latitude of successful reef keepers' tanks.

i normaly aim for .024 +/- .001 most lfs shops i talk to say they keep there tanks at .019 for less stress in there tanks and the cost factor when your replaceing 100+ gal a day it can get expensive

1.025 is exactly where mine has been since the beginning.
