Alright, I'm going to go barebottom soon...I have been running my tank without a sump. It's a 65 gallon, I'm adding a 30 gallon for the sump. I need a way to get the water to my sump, as my tank is not drilled. I'm not sure about the hob overflows, as it seems a lot of people have had trouble with them. There is also a thing where I could use a pump to get the water there, like this:

So what do you guys think? Any suggestions that are better than these?

Thanks,
Ryan

closed loop and tank drain are not any where near the same thing

and imho there is not way ( from looking at the picture ) that that devices cound be made to work for you purpose, it is a closed loop, you need an open drain

a new store bought ie commerical hob overflow should not give you a problem , i have made my own overflows and bearly had a problem, the only realy problems are my errors in wrong sizeing or not checking the overlofw tubes now and again

i would suggest a S.O.S overflow i think its called cpr SOS the smallest one is i think rated at 600 gph and should be over twice what you need, match that with a mag 5 pump should give you 3 - 5 times tank volume depending on the high and number of 90 deg turns in your piping, and if i could suggest plumb your return pump OUT side of your sump, that way the heat from your pump is not radiating into your tank

just my 2 cents

A closed loop is basically a a loop with the input and output into the main display tank. This is primarily used for water flow.

You are tryign to get flow to a sump. Using a pump to do that would be disasaterous IMO. One reason is tough to exactly match up the pumps to keep the flow going to the sump the same as returning.

There are better HOB overflows than others. Look for one with a powerhead attachment that will keep the overflow bubble free and self priming after a power loss. I think Lifereef adn CPR make them.

Or, you can place the "sump" higher than the main tank, effectively making the main tank the "sump"... so you'd pump water from the main tank up to the "sump", then have water overflow from the "sump" back down to the main tank.
