The only thing I have had a problem with concerning my DSB is the glass along the front of the tank between the sand and the glass is always nasty looking. This next weekend I am going to be doing a little changing things around when I install my brand new "Knuckleflow"

I am going to make the sand in the front way way lower, so it looks like all the sand is sloped up towards the back of the tank.

that way the glass can be cleaned, and I still have my sand bed.

Is there a reason that it needs to be a uniform depth?

I can't think of one.

Before everyone jumps in and says remove the dsb, I am not contemplating that, I kind of like all that sand...

I tried to do the same as you knuckle but my clarki's keeping uncovering the bottom of the rocks in front and pushing the sand right backup into a couple of piles in front of the glass. I think they do it just to spite me though. :)

In my experience there is an advantage to not having a uniform depth - diversity. There are critters that prefer shallow sand and they will thrive there.

Guy,

I checked out your full tank shot again. I even like the way varying depth adds to the aquascaping. If its functional and has aesthetic appeal, sound great to me.

How deep is your sand bad exactly? or should i say, what range. In pic it looks like deepest depth is around 4", but pics can be misleading.

That is what I thought

I don't have any fish that like to re-arrange things....
