I've just found my clownfish dry in the floor! :( I had the 20 gallon tank covered but then I read in books and some websites that clownfish do not jump out of the water then two weeks ago I took the cover out because it was an ugly piece of styrofoam.

This tank is conected to my main tank, parameters are perfect and I can not imagine why he jumped out.

I'm posting this because I wanna tell everybody that Clownfish do jump out! Don't trust books in this matter I have the proof over the floor! (well, I flush it already) but you have my word.... I fell sad and angry "why I didn't leave that ugly cover over my tank?

Sorry to hear that.

I am of the opinion that any fish may jump and I try to post that every time some asks if a particular fish will jump.

I lost a dogfaced puffer and a niger trigger to jumping, two fish that I would not have expected to jump out.

I think it maybe has something to do with the 20 GAL tank? Given nothing else is going on. It's probably a very claustrophic feeling to be in there. If I was you I'd stick with "small" fish that don't swim as much in that tank. Cardinals, neon gobies, royal gamma's tend to float vertically.

Yes, I know 20 gal sounds small but that's what the breeding books recommend to breed clownfish and that's what I was trying to do. bad luck for me but worst luck for my fish, there was two sides to jump: one side; the floor, the other side; my sump. He choosed the wrong side.

sorry to hear you have the same experience, now I feel better but when I found him I felt ready to quit .... really.

Sorry to hear about your loss. FWIW, I've found most any fish can jump out of the tank. Some are extremely unlikely, but I've had dwarf angels, big angels, a 4" tang, and even a grouper jump from the tank. For this reason, I will have an enclosed top/canopy regardless of what fish I plan to keep.

I've also had clowns jump. I'm considering the egg crate for my next tank.

I put egg crate on my tank a couple of weeks ago and really like it so far. Keeps fish in and hasn't created any problems that I have noticed.

I highly recommend egg crate.

I had a Pink Skunk Clown jump out of a 180 tank. The tank had a canopy; but, he jumped out in back where the canopy did not cover the tank completely.

Best of luck,

Roy
