I saw one for sale on this site www.absolutelyfish.com, but didn't see it in the store. Didn't ask either, was far from home and they were very busy .. .

If it's not an octopus, what is it?

Even though the link won't work for me, based on the picture, I'd say it's a Mimic Octopus, like you said. It basically tries to imitate any animal in the ocean that would conceal it from danger. I've seen them mimic crabs, cuttlefish, and many other things. This isn't an octopus in the hobby though. I don't think you should get your hopes up. The only octopi in the hobby are the Blue Ringed Octopus (which are very dangerous) and the Octopus named Thomas (don't know what kind of octopus it is). In any case, all octopi are dangerous and their life span's only about a year in captivity so it's not really worth it, especially since if you don't keep it entertained, it will try to escape the tank.

Here's the link again, a comma got in the hyperlink in the original post.

There's a mimic octopus for sale in the invertebrates section, it says RARE!?!

So you are you saying a mimic octopus IS REALLY an octopus?

I figured it might be a starfish that mimics an octopus. Then I *might*be able to keep one.

Can't even imagine what form it takes to mimic a crab .. . ..

It's truly an octopus and honestly, not suited for home aquaria. You most likely won't see in mimic anything, and you be hard pressed to see it at most times. I've sold a few in my days, and I'd never import them again. Most the ones I brought in, are now at part of research at UC Berkely. It's not a very common animal in the wild and with such poor survival rates in captivity, it should remain in the ocean.

There has been a show on octopuses on the discovery channel recently that has a good clip on these guys. It's truly amazing the way they mimic other species. Off the top of my head, I remember seeing it mimic a lionfish, a crab, a sea snake, and a stingray. It was really amazing. I wish I remembered the name of the program, but if you ever see it on the discovery channel it is worth watching.
