I just set up a three tank system with a Little Giant 3 MDQ SC pump as a return. It's pumping from the floor to two tanks at about five feet and one tank at eight feet. I have the tanks plumbed so that they are all flowing to the sump independently, and I have a bypass system so I can isolate any or all the tanks. I just fired it up and within an hour, that pump was too hot to touch. I opened everything fully including the bypass so there would be less backpressure, but it's still boiling hot. I'm not concerned about heating the water in the tanks, but I don't want the pump catching fire. Is it common for these pumps to run so hot?

if I remember right the little giants have a fan to cool the motor. Is the fan working, can you feel air being sucked in the back and blown across the motor?

LG do run really hot even with that little fan in side. One short coming is hte quality of the bearing. When low in oil, it does get hotter than usual. I usually use Johnson & Johnson baby oil for lubr. it periodically, otherwise it can get locked up bad.
