My name is Gene. I would like to tell people of my success with this ammmmazing hobby.
I have been a member of MR for over a year and I am greatful for the team that built this site...Here I found out how to become successful reefer not from listening to peoples advices but by reading all post that dealt with maintaining a successful reef aquarium........
(1)Read as much as u can before spending money. Dont try to save $$$ cause u know its gonna bite u on ur arse later.
When I began, almost every1 who I spoke with prior to MR told me that I will not be successful with the tank that I got. 1 reason is that it was converted from FW to ST. BULL CRAP. Also because my tank was a tall tank
(36l,13w,24h) a problem with water cerculation as i was told.(which is some what incorrect). Members of reefs.org laughed at my questions beacuse i dint know better. But I didnt panic about thier ignorance...I continued on with my reef education...
(2) Read as much as u can before spending money. It will help u save in the long run.
When I began I went t o "FISH TOWN USA" to buy live rock for $5.5 a lb. Which is is not so bad. When I came home with the rock, my appartment stunk for a week cause the live rock that I bought was "DEAD ROCK" that I had major issues with, like cleaning it every .5 year by taking the whole system apart. But with my ambition the rock turned out to look great and I am actually storing it for my next Fish only long tank.
(3) Be patient with your purchases, u never know who might be selling what u need for nearly a fraction of what u were gonna pay for it at the LFS or online store.
Patience, patience , patience. no need to explain.
Never acclimate with fish, PLEASE. Ur rock can do that all by its own self. Dont kill animals that already when through a great deal of pain comming to USA, then to a LFS or vendor, and only then to ur system.
Never use a canister filter, all u need is asump and a skimmer....
Dont forget about ur top off.
Dont put ur hands into the system unless u know 100% there is not bacteria on ur hands
NeVER get a damsel unless u like their look and will hold aggressive fish in that system, they areagressive buggers.
Be careful with 6 line wrasses, they are awsome loking as much as they are agressive towards other calm wrasses or ur invert population.
Never put any live stock into ur system without researching about first and u telling ur self 100% u want it to be there.. Pain in the ass to take it out later on....Speaking from experience about the damsel and the wrasse.....
Dont touch ur system if it looks like its in good health and ur test are near the perfect marks.
If u r new and u need help, please pm me and i',ll gladly give u my knowledge or at least what i have learned from many members here.
and this is what i started with.
