Thank you for your interest Ignacio. If you have a particular course topic in mind, please email me: wade@reefs.org and we can discuss the possibility of teaching a course.

We are almost finished with rebuilding our MACO website, and it will be even nicer than before (and more well protected!). Keep your eyes open for the new site.

What are the guidelines for teaching? Basically, what are you looking for from a class? By no means am I an expert but I am a teacher with some experience in reefing. I have been at it for 5 years now and have been teaching for about the same. What is the student demographic. i.e. do the students tend to be new to the hobby or experienced? Just curious, I'd love to teach but I am by no means an expert in the areas of interest. Thanks for all you do for reefing.

Hi Jason-

:welcome:

The course demographics are all over the map... retirees wanting more information, down to high schoolers wanting to learn the basics. Its your typical array of hobbyists, so there's no way to put a finger on it.

The way we select instructors is that we need someone who can put together a strong outline for a course and either teach that topic or work to gather the information and professionals to help teach it.

We're always searching for people with knowledge to disseminate amongst our community.

What areas seem to have the most interest? I would be interested in putting together an outline for a course but I would be in the category of gathering the information and then presenting it. However, I guess we are all in that place someway or another :D . If you are in need of instructors I am interested. What part of Raleigh are you in? I thought at Wake-Forest Rolesville for a year and actually got my start in reefing from a store down there. Good luck with everything.

Its been a while since I started up a poll. I'll toss one up in this forum and see what people think...

Most of the time, the attendance is best for the class you yourself would most like to see run. The topics are everywhere. Sorry I can't be more specific, but there aren't many specifics out there!

I'll put together an outline to see what you think about my ideas. I need a few nights with a few beers to get a good idea going :D When are you hoping to start classes?

Classes will begin in the spring (April-ish) and run into eternity so long as I can find instructors for them.

If you come up with a good syllabus, email it and any other ideas to me using the message system here or wade@reefs.org

Wade,

I am interested in participating in this program. Are there still teaching positions available? I have been a hobbyist since 1981 and a professional since 1993.

First,
:welcome:

Yes, MACO is always picking up new instructors for our courses. We currently have two lined up to start in the spring. The website should be coming up soon.

If you have an interest in teaching a course, come up with a topic and a generic syllabus and message them to me or email me at the reefs.org address in the message above.

Thanks!
Wade

Update!

Yes, I'm very sorry for the delay in activating MACO yet again. We've had developmental concerns (security releases, etc) as well as other background issues impeding our release of the site.

That said - keep your eyes open for the live website within a couple of weeks. We have a couple of instructors/courses lined up and all of that information will be on the site!

Again - sorry for the delay.

We're still searching for more instructors for future MACO courses! Our website is up and stable and we'll begin advertising courses as soon as instructors provide us with start dates.

If there is a topic you would like covered or if you'd like to teach a course, please let us know!

We're searching for instructors on any topic, but some topics that have had good participation in the past include:

Fabrication - acrylic
Lighting
Fish biology and compatibility
Coral biology
Coral husbandry
Reef Photography
...

Would you be interested in offering a course along the lines of "Microbiology and the Reef Aquarium"? It would cover bacteria, their metabolism, and advanced nitrogen cycle topics.

I'm a microbiologist and college professor, with about 4 years of reefing experience.

imperator :welcome:

I imagine that a bacteriology course would be very well received. Developing an understanding of the interactivity and niche environments where microbes flourish would be wonderful (I'd take it!). I'll contact you by message.

Cheers,
Wade
