MarineDepot says they aren't to be used externally. But they have a threaded intake and output and a sealed body. :? I've used a Mag 2 externally, heck MRC uses them as their Ca reactor pumps.

I used one mag 12 and two mag 18's externally for several years. No problems.

I ran my 75G with an externally mounted 9.5 for 5 years. No problems. Good pump IMO.

I tried to feed my skimmer with an externally mounted mag 7, but couldn't get it to stop leaking at the fitting. It tightens all the way down to the body, so there is no more turns to tighten it anymore. That sucked.

I ran both externally, but I don't now. For me the external 9.5 and 12 seemed to have repeated impeller problems, so I moved on.

i run a mag 9.5 and mag 12 externaly for my CL....i find I had to silicone the intake to prevent it sucking in air. Although more plumers tape may have solved the problem.
