They definitely work fine controlled by my Aquacontroller. Mine is set for 30 minute intervals and I have no idea what the minimum is.

No, it will work fine for a 3'. Jetaero had his on a 40 gallon 8O FYI: unlike the Tunze, this thing can be dialed WAY down to about 30% max flow.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you here, I'm a bit puzzled by this statement. My Tunze controller had dials from about 30% of flow to 100%. When I first installed them, they started at 30% at all times and I progressively dialled them up.

Yikes, my bad. Ya, the streams can be dialed way down too. Never mind :P

The one advantage the streams have is they are quieter since they are fully submersed. The Vortechs make a very light mechanical hum which isn't audible over your skimmer or inline return pump.

I think both products are pretty darn good actually, though the Vortechs have the edge for me in terms of looks, flexibility (depth of positioning) and lack of intrusiveness in the tank. Wish list for the next big tank definitely (a few years ahead). :)

and the vortechs have battery back up as well as NO power cables in the tank.....anytime you can remove a source of shock is a good thing...

What is the approximate flow rate?

Will they make different models like the Tunze?

I like the design of the pumps. My Rating

+ much better look than the Streams
+ external motor

- it seems that the direction of the flow is not variable

I could not find anything about the power of the pump. How much Liters/Gallons the pump nwill circulate?
Any problems with vibrations known?

On balance i think its a quite good pump particulary with regard to the design and the bracketless mounting. Maybe they will find a way to make the direction of the flow flexible.

Unfortunately the pump will not be available in Germany in the next time.

At MACNA they said the Vortechs put out about 3000 gph, same as 6100 Streams are rated for. They also said they compared both "side by side" and the Vortech actulayy had a higher flow than the Stream. Of course, hardly an unbiased tester.

The one problem for me (other than the fact I already have 4 Streams) is that they are only rated for 3/4" glass and mine is 1"

Len,

Did you notice any humming? was it silent? I have a 6ft tank, what do you think? one on each end?

did they provide a target release date?

Ben, there is very quiet humming from the outer half, nothing that bothers me. Two for you 6' tank would be perfect. Not sure about release date.

Wow Allen! 1" glass. Do you have any pics of your tank? Must be a monster :D

what are the odds that this jobber will work with a wavemaster or such device... until the controller comes out?

It's 400 gal, 8ft long. The ends, which are where the Streams are and where Vortechs would have to go are only 3/4" with the front and back 1". I have 1/4" black acrylic inside the glass on the ends though so it's still 1" total.

I don't have any recent pics. I had a crash a bit over a year ago (carelessness, salinity meter off). Corals are finally starting to grow well again but it still looks so "new" since I started mostly with frags. One of these days I'll take some new pictures.

These Vortech's sound interesting.

I doubt that I'll be tossing my Tunze 6200's and multicontroller any time soon. Both are oustanding products from the sounds of it.

The Vortech's do need a multi controller that can do everything the Tunze 7095 does. That mulitcontroller is awesome IMO. It makes the Tunze's special.

Sweet!! - I sure hope they blow Tunzes out of the water on price too! (Not that I have anything against Tunze, but it sure would be nice to have a more affordable option available...) 8)

How much noticeable vibration is there on these? - Is there a motor in the outer (powered) half or is the (in-tank) prop driven by electro-magnets in the outer half?

The motor is on the outter portion only. There is no electricity inside the tank. There is also virtually no vibrations. I experience no vibrations on the glass and hear no cavitations. It's a well-designed product.

There will be a very advanced controller coming out for the Vortechs soon, supposedly more advanced then the Tunze. It is wireless even! The number of innovations for this pump is incredible IMO. In the meanwhile, people have been using it on their wavemakers without problems.

Norm,

Product should be available within the next two months. Beta testing
is completed.

-Tim

I was hoping to sneak in on a controller beta test.. :P

Ahh well.. - Hope they keep it reasonably priced.. - Amazing how so many want to get rich off of just one sale these days.
