Alright, so lets say I do something really dumb (not at ALL unusal) and manage to drop a 5 gallon bucket into my tank and cause a tidal wave that gushes over every side of the tank..

These things are resistant enough that a "gentle dousing" like that isn't gonna fry 'em?

Oh, yeah, and actually, I did do that just a couple months ago. - Nearly started an electrical fire and wound up having to replace an electrical outlet behind the tank.

Sounds like a knuckleheaded move to me....

Yeah, it was entertainment for the whole house that night. Everyone was suprised I stayed so calm when flames were only shooting about a foot out of the outlet. (I've seen much worse actually.)

No Righty, I didn't replace it with a wet use outlet.. - I'm in an apartment still (for at least another year) and am moving again in just a couple of weeks. -- Thanks for bringing it up though, I'll be sure to put one in before setting up at the new place. (As likely as I probably am to do it again.)

Anyway... - If its mostly at the point where power enters the housing it should be easy enough to add some protection there.

One will work, but two is better. I don't have the actual dimensions. I'd guess the diameter is somewhere around 3.5" and the two halves are about 2" deep for each.

What's up with the "wireless" wave controller? Is that coming any time soon?

On the issue of the motor getting hot...could I add a computer processor heat sink to the back and cool it off more effienctly? That would be awesome. You could bust out the old Pentium 1 thermal tape heat sinks from old systems and stick it on that motor.

Today i went to the Interzoo Exhibition in Nuernberg (The world’s biggest trade fair for pet supplies - Interzoo 2006: Around 1,270 exhibitors from over 50 nations)

At the tradeshow from Tunze i saw an amazing new product. => The Tunze Nanostream. Here are the details of the product flyer:

Design is much more than only styling of existing products: It is the expression of an idea and a concept; it opens one’s eyes. Turbelle®
nanostream combines aesthetics and function. This innovative circulation pump sets new records: At a diameter of only 70 mm it enables a
water flow of 4,500 l/h (1,189 USgal./h) at an energy consumption of only 8 W. The pump includes a very large strainer for the intake which
prevents premature soiling. The spherical shape permits an ingenious 3D setting of the direction of flow. As a standard feature, Turbelle®
nanostream is supplied with a magnetic holder, which enables uncomplicated attachment at any position on the aquarium pane.
The speed of the Turbelle® nanostream 6055 can be controlled by a Singlecontroller or a Multicontroller; in addition, they have been provided
with a fish care function in case of motor standstill.

Also they presented a new more powerful Stream. But see by yourself :D

HermanTheGerman, neat pump there in the show.

Well, the ball-and-socket is only 2 DOF (2D), not 3D, but I am sure most people has no problem with that. :)

Can you explain that to a novice? I see up, down, plus 360 degree rotation.

Does anyone have one yet besides the Beta?

The production pumps have been shipping for a few months now and many people have them, including myself. I can only speak for myself, but mine has been running great for months.

Installed 3 voretch pumps today to see how they would rate against the streams.
Well so far the streams are still the best for quite a few reasons.

Installing the vortech is not the easiest as you have to line up the pumps 100% or they make a knocking should, especially on a glass tank.
Once installed correctly they run ok however they are nosey especially if you have 3 going at once. I have them all lined up on one side of the tank.
the flow is nice and wide on the vortech however if you have a 9ft long tank you don’t get much water movement on the other side of the tank unlike with the streams you get a even flow around the whole tank.
The vortech pumps a lot of water on the surface and the flow only goes about 3ft and then very little flow. The vortech does have a lot of flow on the surface and below the pump.
The other thing that is not the best is the cable tight that holds the vortech cable on the out side of the tank. It can be seen from inside the aquarium.

Will play around more with them as I am sure I can get them going better but really surprised no one has every mentioned any of these issues.

I find the vortechs go my full 52" length very well. It slows down a lot after the first 24", but if you put an air stone in there, you will see that the flow is definitely present at 52" in big (but slow) force). This is a good thing if you ask me. The Streams are nice; their flow is more laminar with higher velocity .... probably better for longer tanks but not many people have 9' tanks.

My pump isn't very noisy. My skimmer is noisier then the vortech, as is my return pump. However, I run my about 80%. I don't run 100% partly because of the noise but primarily because there are too many corals close to it that would get blasted like crazy.

I don't affix the cable tie to the tank. In principle, you can affix the mount anywhere above the vortech. The idea is to keep it in place with as little violent movement as possible in the rare event the magnet gets knocked ajar.

thanks len for the feedback.

If you have 3 vortech vs 4 streams the vortech are so loud, with the streams I could just hear them. Evwn my wife asked me what that loud noise was after I installed them.

I feel there is far too much flow on the surface of the water especially in the first foot from the vortech, the water hits my brace, maybe they need additional impellers to choose from so you can vary the flow further down the tank.

I think they are working on a directional nozzle (I hope so). It would be an affordable and easy change. That said, mine is located about 6" below the top of the water and I have no issues with water rising to high nor kicking up the sand. Maybe at 100%, it's a different story. Just goes to show the Vortech stream pattern is really really wide whereas the Streams are more directional.
