Wazzel : Believe me, not only drilled tanks suffer from that noise!!! Ask my wife!!! It's really a pain in the anal fin, but it can be fixed. :D

True. Same solution can be used for both. I have seen pics of the super short stockman for HOB's but could not find one to post.

Unfortunately, I can not supply a picture, but I have a CPR overflow box rated at 600gph. I only turn over 300gph so that helps to start with. Furthermore, instead of using the schedule 40 1" pipe to drain to the sump, I used a 1½" flexible hose that goes over the threaded part of the bulkhead of the CPR unit and return my water with it. Using that big of a tube, it's not completely filled with wate, so it leaves space for air to travel through without any restriction. Also, my flexible tube is not completely under the water but rather comes in the sump at an angle, thus leaving a small opening for air to come in and since it's slanted, the water comes down more smootly. In the CPR box, I simply leave it as is, with no modifications or use of a small tube to exit the air. Since my turn over is quite low compared to the size of the overflow box, the water doesn't reach the top of the strainer-bulkhead, so the air is able to escape freely.

It might not be of much help but that is how I am setup. Maybe it can give you a general idea as to how you can dampen the gargling noise. The key is to let the pipe breathe like it was said before.

If you put the stockman or durso where the sponge is located that would help with the gurgleing is that is where it is comming from. One thing I did not mention is the cap of either need to be drilled to adjust the amount of air you let in. I like to drill them from the side throught the pipe so you can turn the cap to adjust the air.

I'm not saying the what SB proposes will not work. I have not had much success with out the drain pipe mods to quiet any of my tanks.

Remove part H (the sponge) and replcae with a stockman or durso overflow. Look at the pics I linked on page 2 for ideas.
