I am trying to find out from your individual expierence how long it would take to make money fragging.

Is a small or large tank better?

Some stories from those who do or those who have tried would be very beneficial to me.

What types of corals are the quickest to grow?

Is it worth the time and initial expense?

Thanks

I do it for fun. Unless you have a very efficient setup with low overhead, or have some pricey, hard to find frags, it won't worth your time to frag and charge people only $20 for it.

Do tank maintenance. I have a friend that grosses over 200k a year doing it.

If you turn your hobby into something your doing for profit it then turns into a job. Granted, you may like your job, but it is still a job that requires routine chores that aren't alway convenient or fun. Also, if its only small profit you can't quit your day job so you will then have two jobs.

Good input guys.
I enjoy what i do now(mortgages), but I have a passion for reefing.

As for tank maintenance, do you mean like what I do at home ie, water chnges cleaning pumps and everything else?
That is the best part of the hobby huh(yeah right).

But i would get to see some beautiful tanks.

As far as a second job(i am not bragging), I only work roughly 20 -25 hours a week doing mortgages. I have a good staff that handles the bulk of the work. I meet with people get documents in the beginning and then hand it off to my processor.

I could easily take on something on the side to generate more cash flow.

I appreciate every bit of input everyone offers thanks.

Yeah, the guy I'm talking about does everything. Water changes, pump cleans, filter cleans, and new setups. I've helped him out a few times.

At one point I was making enough to pay for the hobbie, but that is as good as it got. I did not have a seperate tank, I just took cuttings when someone was paying.

Go with the maint. route, I have just two tanks that I take care of for a nursing home and a resturant. What they pay me almost takes care of the expenses for my tank. Plus I get to keep or sell any frags tht come from the tanks. Ive had the nursing home tank for two years and just got the resturant and when I set up the resturant tank I didnt purchase any corals everything was a frag from my home tank and the nursing home.

Pretty cool stuff. I am thinking of running an ad in the paper for Tank maintenance. I have researched all day and I can only find one actual business in the state that does maintenance, which is no where near me.
I have been trying to figure out how to charge and that is getting me.

I am thinking of a monthly fee based on the size tank and what type it is.

I am actually going to do it... That is why I am trying to collect as much info as possible. So thanks for all so far. :D
