Couple of months ago, some of my smaller fish managed to find their way into the overflow :?

I purchased some inexpensive, vinyl gutter guard from the local hardware store, and zip-tied it to the overflow teeth:

No more missing fish :D

I'm using mouse pads to set my Mag pumps on in the sump. No more vibration.

Great idea! I need that for under the chiller, just to make sure.

Mouse pads also work well for external pumps.

I use cheap chopsticks to move stuff around and get where I can't reach.

The cheap ultimate fragging tool is the dremel with a diamond cutting blade. Sometimes they have them on special for $20 and then $5 for the diamond.

Peace,

Cut a scrub pad and roll it to fit the U tube for the overflow bow, then hit the U tube on your hand til the scrub pad is work out the other side. repeat til U tube is clean.

Safe and silent overflow:

you need two drains in one overflow box (drain A and B).

A: no standpipe, ball valve in sump. Adjust so that this drain handles most of the flow (all but, say, 20 or 30 gal/hour). No air = silent.

B: standpipe: handles the extra trickle A doesn't. So little water in this drain that it is also silent.

B has lots of extra drain capacity so if something goes wrong, B will handle any excess and the noise will clue you into the problem.

I am using a Hawaiian Punch gallon jug to drip kalkwasser in my tank. Using a ridged airline hose in the jug drilled through cap and a piece of air tubing. I tie a not in the hose to regulate the drip.

Do you drip every day?

Yes. Sometimes 2 gallons in a 24 hour period. That is my limit. I do mix a little vinegar in the solution to increase the amount of Ca+ that I can deliever per gallon. I can somtimes get 2 teaspons of kalkwasser into one gallon using this method. I see no negative effects. I do water changes weekly.

My auto top off is a good idea I think.

I have a Litremeter III feeding a Kalk reactor that runs 24/7. I have the rate pretty close to the tank evaporation rate (maybe a little more). I have a Ultralife float swithc in my sump that the Litremeter is plugged into.

This gives the tank a constant top off and if the tank doesn't need any then the pump is shut off.

Glad you said that. I'm getting ready to buy one and didn't know about the diamond cutting blade.

Amazon.com has a tools section and I bought a bunch of diamond blades from them and they were dirt cheap and didn't need to wait for a shipment from china.

This one I came up with today. I was plumbing a CL dart with a 4 way. 70 some joints to the thing. Test run has 4 leaks. 3 are at threaded joints, but 1 is on the out put side of a ball valve. I have never had any luck trying to fix a joint like this. Small leak, I wondered how long it would take for salt creep to fill it. As I fixed the other three leaks I decided I'll have to go to HD and get a new valve and union and start over. THEN it hits me. I took the hose from my shop vac and put it on the end of the pipe. Closed the valve and turned the vac on. Then I went around the outside of the leaking joint with pvc glue. It worked I was able to create enough suction to suck glue into the joint and fix the leak. :D

I feed my tank live mosquito wigglers from five gallon bucket way out back… the fish always seem to love em…and I figure the risk of parasites is minimal/none due to the salt….no problems to date.

(i am almost positive I will get yelled at for this one)

Monthly 25% water change.

Not creative, but very effective.

I'm trying to find a dremel for somewhat cheaper (found it for 60 bucks at HD and LOWES). Also, can't find diamond blades for under $15. Anyone can help me out? :D
