I suspect the next breakthrough will be in nutrition. There are still too many creatures people buy that cannot be housed for the long term because of diet.

There is a long way to go in lighting. I think we will see more intense, less heat-generating, lighting systems before too long (possibly LED? if so I gotta wait for the price to come down).

I suspect the number of captively bred species will significantly increase, allowing a wide variety of formerly "difficult to keep" species to be kept by average hobbists.

Entire LED lights are in development as we speak.

I'd like to see something like a filter/skimmer/reactor combo, but not a skilter. Like a filter on the left side, skimmer in the middle, reactor for whatever media on the right side, but it's all one unit that hangs on the back of the tank.

Peace,

Chip

I agree with ctgretzky99 as Mike would suspect :D Some call me biased, but I held the same beliefs prior to taking my job at Reed Mariculture (Reef Nutrition).

I think the "breakthrough" will be an overall lowering of prices which will allow more people into the hobby.

If this happens, I hope it happens after (due to?) captive propagation, so that the legions of new hobbyists don't put further pressure on reef ecosystems.

I'd like to see some breakthroughs in collection/handling - it would be great to be sure that everything at my LFS was collected responsibly and handled to maximize its health, from collection to retail.

The more people involved in the hob the better chance for breakthroughs in husbandry.

imo you're speaking of nanos when you say that.

i think the affordability aspect is already here with the acceptance of nanos now. not that nanos are cheap but setting up a 10g tank versus a 75g are two completely different cost-beasts.

but i agree with the "difficult-to-keep" break-thru as the likely next big step.

Marillion,
I have heard rumors of a filter that combines a denitrator and calcium reactor in one. I think it uses the low pH water from a denitrator to disolve araginite.

Don't hold you breath for this. Well, actually I know nothing about it until 15 seconds ago, and my 10 seconds of accessment seem to indicate that the low flow rate of denitrator that make it pH low makes it not very practical for a calcium rxtor.

How about some free samples, Greshy? ;)

Peace,

No problem, simply come to one of our local club meetings or a local event, or an event that they go to :) Last event I scored some arcti-pods and rotifers, great stuff!

A friend of mine has been to tanks in Europe where they are being used. It apparently works with great succes. He is in the process of building his own diy model.

I'd say lighting, and I also think pumps. The recent high tech advances with those magnetic Vortex wavemakers is an example. Plankton-friendly pumping is a needed innovation, as well as more energy-efficient pumping, IMO.

I hope the same.

Any web site or company link to the European model? I am *very* open minded about new tech if there is specification and such rather than personal experience on a black box device.
