I scanned this picture from page 105 & 107 of The Simple Guide to Marine Aquariums by Jeffrey Kurtz. I hate to scan copyrighted work, but let's call it civil disobedience. Pictures are worth 1000 words and I am unable to find this product anywhere despite my attempt to describe it accurately. . .

I have no idea where to find that as I've never seen it, but wonder why you're thinking of using them?

EDIT: :) saw your other thread about wanting the stuff. Have you ever thought of DYI'ing rock out of foam?

Here's an article about it, I know several people who have done some nice aquascaping using this technique. There are other articles floating around the net as well...

I bought an OLD DIY-salt 150 gallon AGA half inch thick glass tank.

I want to cover the PVC pipes with this stuff with out adding weight.

Once it gets covered with corraline it looks pretty natural, and you can indent little spots on it and put encrusting form corals like green stars on it for effect.

Just a thought...

I wonder if you can't achieve the same effect with "Great-Stuff!" or if that has any chemical reaction. You could just squirt your own rocks then shave until they look neat.

I plan to cover these fake blocks with the real stuff somewhat.

For no real reason, I think this glass foam is cheaper, cheaper than real lived rock and cheaper to ship because it's light-weight. I could buy a lot.

My guess is it's something from another industry . . . like this company that makes ceramic air diffusers:

They sell the stuff at Petco. Sometimes they call it cultured, sometimes natural, lava rock. The stuff is cream colored and lightweight. The caveat is that it usually has holes and nooks already carved in it.

www.alliedfoamtech.com sells a mix that you can make ceramic foam from, if I understand what they do properly. I think you'd need to buy your own oven to cure it in, though.

Kiln insulating firebricks are ceramic, lightweight, and carvable. They come up to 3" thick.

Good luck.

*** P.S. I'd also like to take this moment to officially withdraw from the nano build-off, seeing as the tank cracked, etc, etc. Congrats Guy.

Yes, I think it's cell-pore or very similar! The photo I posted seems to have a color variation to it. Cell-pore looks uniformly beige.

Cell-pore is a mystery itself!!

If www.kentmarine.com bought it, I couldn't find it for sale on their site.

First www.cellpore.com was originally manufacture by:

Cercona Of America, Inc.
5911 WolfCreek Pike
Dayton, OH 45426
(937) 854-9860

Their website is dead, not even cached in google.

Cellpore.com has a site, but you can't seem to order on-line

Cell-Pore, Inc.
Divison of Pourous Ceramic Shapes LLC
1275 Kinnear Rd. Columbus, OH 43212
Phone: (614) 340-1840 Fax: (614) 487-3704
EMail: [email protected]

www.drsfostersmith.com sells cell-pore, but it's not cheap.

I'm going to call cell-pore and see if they will sell me a
BioSlab 9" x 9" x 4"

Wow that is kinda expensive on the DRFS site. It is an interesting idea though. Should make for good bio filtration, and being carvable would be so nice. The thin slabs would be good to glue to the back of the tank to create a wall effect. My only concern is if the pores are too big and might collect detritus. Let us know if you find a cheaper source and if it works out for you.

IT's expensive stuff, DFS is cheap on it, if you can belive that.

The inventor is a very nice guy, and has tons of ideas. He usually attends the MO conferences, so if you go to MACNA< you may be able to pick his brain ;)

Kent MArine sold the product back to Cell-Pore.

Contact cell-pore at the info above.

They might sell you "seconds" for about half the price of Drs Foster Smith.

Just placed my order for 4 big blocks!

Thanks for your help

I just got my shipment. I knew something what wrong when my cousin picked-up the box off my porch and said, what did you order-ROCKS?

I didn't expect the stuff in the photo to weight so much.

And carving this cell-pore, though it could be done, I will NOT be attempting.

What it does look very useful for is filtering, if you buy smaller pieces that fit your filter and could replace fabric, etc.

But not me! I bought 4 GIANT chunks, thinking I would carve them.

A more accurate description would be foam cinder-blocks!

So again, anyone know Jeffrey Kurtz???????????????

I'd really like to know what the heck the stuff in the picture is.

Tracked down the Author Jeff Kurtz -

Here is his reply to the topic of the glass foam rocks in his book.

--------
Hi Robert,

I think the glass foam rocks I mentioned in the book have since gone the way of the dodo. They made an impression on the hobby when they were first introduced but then seemed to fade from the scene. A few years back, I was trying to track them down online and had no success, either. If the book is reprinted again, I'll ask them to take that section out, but, unfortunately, it's still out there with that obsolete information in it (one of the drawbacks to print!).

Thanks for your question.

Jeff

Hmmm, when I was checking local landscape yards for suitable rocks for a cichlid tank I came across this rock that was very light and could be "sculpted" some. Someone mentioned glass rocks here and it reminded me of that.

I believe it was a darker color, maybe even black. Sold by the lb and I read it could be scraped out to make shapes and such but it was glass so you had to be careful. Man I wish I could remember what they called it at the supply places. When I was asking for Lace rock they were thinking it was that rock I just described.

Might be worth a try.

Good luck.
