im in the process of setting up a 210 gal reef. the tank flow rate has a max rate of 1200 g/ph which only allows for a max turnover of about 6 times per hour....my question is what is a average amount of times to turn a tank over per hour ,also the pump i bought for it with turn it over about 4.5 times per hour i think 4.5 times per hour is sufficent ,like to get some oppinions on this thanks

I like to get about 10x going through the sump. I think my current tank has about 8x. For additional circulation I got about 50x between penductors and a tunze stream.

I have about the same. 12x turnover through the sump but with 2 penductors and one MJ mod (approx 2000gph?) it is really moving in the tank itself.

wow....that much? i am using a 350gph return in my sump. 75 gallon tank......are you guys saying this is too little? i thought about going heavier, but i figured the fuge would look like this:

I have about 10X (my pump does 950GPH but is dialed back just a tad) being pumped from the sump and about 2-3X goes to to the fuge and the other 8X goes through the sump (and about 5-6X) is grabbed by the skimmer. My total tank turnover rate (in the display) is about 22-25X which is enough for my LPS dominant tank. :)

hmm...i might try a stronger pump. again..my comical reference about the fuge was sorta serious...i mean...doesn't the life in the fuge need a slightly calm water to ...do their thing?

On my 90 I am running a mag 12 for my return. I don't have a refugium so I try to keep the turn over high. I have noticed a big difference in the corlas since I added a bunch more current.

FWIW I think some people run their refugiums seperate and on small PH from the sump. At least that is my understanding of it.

In tank circulation should be high but sump turnover should be close to the draw from your pump that feeds the skimmer unless your skimmer is a recirculating model. So no need to have high turnover in the sump.

ya i have heard high turnover too but when my tank is roughly 200 gal and the drains can only handle a max of 1200 gph that makes it only possible to turn over the tank 6 times per hour right

A max of six times an hour through the overflows. You will need power heads or a closed loop system to get the additional flow you will neeed for a reef.

I am running two GenX PCX40's at 1190gph each on my 125g tank. With the plumbing involved, I would estimate that I am running about a 16x turnover in my tank, through the sump. I also have two MJ1200's modded with the MJMod med. flow kits. I wouldn't be able to raise this if I wanted without overflowing the tank. This will likely drop slightly when I put my chiller in line.

actually the tank can handle 2400 gph through the overflows hehe so i through a mag 24 on it and the sump looked like the picture above...so im running a 900 gph pump thinking of going to a 1800 gph but the current pump seems fine ATM.

still deciding on what i want to do for circulation,i want 2 tunze streams on a multi controler :)

wow, looks like we are all a tad different when it comes to GPH -- so with that said, it all works :)

I run a danner 3600 on my 180 - after my head pressure I netting about 2500 gph or about 14x/hour. I personally prefer the greater flow rate.

I think a large factor to consider is noise, the more you turn it the more noise your going to get -- so keep that in mind.

IMO you're fine with the smaller return pump to keep the noise down in the sump/overflows provided you're getting the in-tank circulation you need via other sources.

The Tunzes you mentioned are a great choice for that. Even the fixed speed versions (much cheaper) work well. The VorTech units are another similar option.

ya i know about the vortech pumps , they seem good but ive read bad reviews on it,also its the same price as the tunze units so tunze is probably what ill go with , just gotta scrounge up 700 bucks now :x
