The C.earleis, C.rhomboids, and Terelabrus are dead.

For some reason, water was splashed on my Aquacontroller and it shorted the temperature monitor. The temperature seems to have defaulted to 20.0 F. So my heater kicked on and stayed on while my chiller stayed eternally dormant. The halides were on as scheduled. When I got home from work today, the tank temp was 104. Yes, 104 F.

The rhomboid and shrimps were dead already. I came back just in time to see my two C.earleis take their last breathe. They died inches apart. The Terelabrus struggled terribly, flopping behind the rocks where it remains. I'm sure it's dead now too. So I gathered those I could and gave them a proper burial.

Strange enough, the black tang and the joculator angel did not seem effected at all. I have coral bleaching events, as expected, but surprisingly less then half a dozen corals look severely damaged. The crabs lived. The snails lived. The clam lived.

This month has been a really really bad one. :(

Aww, man! I'm really sorry to hear that, Len :(

Things have to get worse before they get better. I'm sure you've seen the last of it :D

So sorry to hear Len.

It happens to all of us. I hate that it does and wish that it didn't.

Thanks guys. Tank is very cloudy now and the extent of bleaching is more evident. We'll know more tomorrow.

One thing though, if your temp defaulted at 20F, why did the heaters kick on? :? :(

The controller's temp defaulted to 20F, so the heaters kicked on to try to raise the temp to 80F. Of course, it never got there since the controller was stuck on 20F, so the heater just kept going until the temp got to where it did.

Sorry to hear this.
Of all the dumb things new reefers can do and do...I think (speaking for myself) I've lost more livestock due to "equipment malfunctions" then anything else. Wouldn't you like to be able to hold the manufacture's resonsible.

If it makes you feel any better...just think it could have been a lot worse.

That does seem to be a fault in the controller. Why isn't the default set at 76`? It seems like it is made to mess up your system if it hits default?

Sorry about your fish. That really hurts....

Sorry Len. I've actually been in that situation just recently. A few weeks ago, my heater went haywire. When I noticed the water was warmer than usual (90 F to be precise from 77 F), my Cleaner Shrimp and Mandarin were already dead. Fortunately, that's all I lost. It took a while for the anemone and Kole Tang to start eating again but they came around. I'd also just like to mention that like your Black Tang and Joculator Angel, my Ocellaris Clowns and Sailfin Tang did not seem affected at all by the rapid change in temperature. They just swam around like it was any other day, whereas the rest of the crew were hiding and struggling to breathe.

Again, sorry Len. It happens to everyone.

Thanks again guys. I think I can manage the losses. So far, about a dozen SPS colonies and all the blastomussas are dead. I'm hoping the other bleached SPS live. The angel also didn't make it through the night, so all i have left is the black tang. I'm going to do some clean up today.
