I drop about 2 gallons per day on my 180 with a 55 gallon sump and 40 gallon fuge (but the fuge is new - just weeks old). I run Three 250 Watt MH's and four 96 watt PC's. Glass lids on the tank - sump and fuge topless in my basement.

I set up a float to replace evap automatically from a gravity fed 30 gallon reserve of RO.

My 90 gallon is topless and drops about 1 gallon per day - year round.

I use a coralife float valve. I used to have it on gravity feed until a snail somehow got into my return and got stuck in the ball valve. The sump level kept dropping because of the restiction in the return and the gravity feed kept feeding overflowing the tank! For a little extra safety, I now have a small electric pump in a 10 gallon trash can. A timer turns on the pump once a day for a half hour. The float valve is still connected and will still meter the sump level(the temp and relative humidity will always effect your evaporation rate)
The only drawback is the sump gets all the water in about 15-20 minutes, but it does not effect the temp at all(about a half gallon of fresh water in a 45 gallon system) The corals sometimes seem to open up when they get the fresh water?? It may simulate a rain event??
