How long do you let water run for new RO membrane?

New RO membranes contain a chemical preservative coating so you have to throw away the first batch of product water. My question is, how much do you throw away? And do you bypass the DI cartridge while your breaking in the new membrane, or does the DI cartridge need to be "broken in" as well?

I bypass the DI with 10 gallons, then do 10 more that I throw away.

Better to bypass the DI like matt says. I would only do 5 gal or so. For DI, it is usually not an issue, since I don't use it for drinking/cooking like the RO, but for those people that are paranoid about it, maybe another 5 gal is more than enough.
