Hi I'm thinking of getting the tunze wavebox for some nice flow in my 80gal tank. I will be setting up a much bigger tank in jan next year(moving to new place then). I'm buying the box in the mean time and trying it out on the existing tank for now.

A few q's

1. Does the wavebox put alot of strain on your tank?
2. What sort of effect can i expect it to have on my overflow and can the wave action be set so the wave on top of the water is not so high(existing tank only has about 4cm from top to watermark.(running no sump on this tank)
3. and most important - is it any good/worthwile to buy.

I was thinking of buying the wave2k wavemaker, but cant get anyone to ship it to SA. If I can, would you suggest rather to get the wave2k instead of the tunze?

I have seen the tunze on a 240g tank and it is amazing. I am sold on them as soon as I get my bigger tank that is one of the purchases.

Yeah, waveboxes work. Pretty sweet. For larger tanks they are nice, but for small tanks (anything below 150) looks dumb. Its a big box.

I think tunze wave boxes are better thank W2K.

Effective is a matter of debate I guess. I saw them working in a larger tank (600g) not too long ago, and I have to honestly say it is the most ridiculous thing I have seen in a long time. Yes, it does gently sway the water back and forth, but it seems that it is all it does. Seems like the water around the corals just go back and forth. Very little chaotic flow, if any, get created with these things.

I guess it is ultimately a personal choice, but for the cost I would invest in one of the other choices for flow creation.

I have a WB in my 300 Gallon tank. I have the advantage of having a son who works in the LFS and was able to observe their 220 g. for a long time, many, many times both before and after they added the WB.

Obviously the LFS has access to whatever equipment, and as much of it as they want.

The difference in their already beautiful tank was, and is amazing.

If there is nothing at all in a tank except water and the WB, I suppose you could say that the water is just going back and forth (gee, that sounds like a real wave, in the real ocean coming into, then receding from the beach), but as soon as you start putting live rock, and corals and fishes, and invertebrates in the tank, the rythmic surge (gee, that sound just like a real wave...) generates chaotic flow around these structures and denizens in an unpredictable manner.

Maybe you can come close to this with a bunch of pumps, but none really generate a wave. In my tank you can actually see the wave roll across the whole of the 96 inches of the tank.

If you have the chance, look at an established tank with a wave box installed, then turn off all the other pumps except the WB, you'll be amazed at the flow it alone generates around everything.

My only question is: how much of wave will it really generate in an 80 gallon tank? I'm not saying it won't do well, it's just that I've only seen them used in larger tanks.

Good Luck, I think you'll love it.
