I need to find a quality skimmer that can go OUTSIDE my sump (external) I just don't have room in my small sump (cube tank you know .. so smallish sump) for the size skimmer I need.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Myreefcreations MR-1. Have you considered a HOB skimmer? You could hang it off your sump possibly.

actually I have, but even my REMORA is too tall. It doesnt go all the way down INTO the sump, so I need clearance room to fit it in and lift the cup out. If I could do external .. I'd like to do that I think. It should allow me more room for a bigger skimmer. I can set it down into a 10 g tank to catch anything that might overflow ...

ummm because then I would have to somehow get water into and out of THAT tank.
= drilling and another pump.

THAT tank would be OUTSIDE the sump.

OOORR I could buy one of the auto cut-offs they offer

All the plumbing you would need would be a bulkhead that drains it (the 10g skimmer tank) into your sump. Just have your display drain feed the skimmer. No extra pump necessary. Matter of fact, you could even plumb your skimmer so that the output dumps into the sump...

Or better yet, since you can fit an extra 10g tank under your tank, why not just go with a bigger tank for the sump?

Not doing any more plumbing. No room for a bigger sump. my stand is only 30x30

If you don't want to do any more plumbing, then forget about an external skimmer.

You could fit various size tanks in your stand if it's 30x30.

..this is the problem with smaller tanks. I finally found a skimmer for my sump in my 55g, but it took a long time, because the footprint of these skimmers are really large. I've got a corallife needle wheel, which also has the HOB feature. I love the skimmer. But this is just one more reason to go for a much larger tank. 8)
