Found this sucker while doing some work on my tank. Is this guy a beloved friend in the depths of my sand bed? Or is he going to have an appointment with my microwave? (And no, I dont eat worms. you sick, sick, individual)

I personally think they are bad but I know other people might beg to differ.

You might have more of them because it looks like part of it got cut off and regenerated.

looks like a bearded fireworm and from what I have read, it feeds on coral among other things. so probably not a good thing to have I would say. also, be careful not to touch it with bare skin, it is called a fireworm for good reason.
it's a pretty cool find though, someone might want it

Imo Imo Imo !!!

It's not a Bristle Worm.
It's Fire Worm which has been mentioned above, that will feed on Corals & Inverts.
I don't think it is thats why I pasted the link so they can decide for themselves fire worms tend to have larger white bristles and I don't know how long its been in the system , but if it were a fire worm it would already be attacking corals !! Thats why I started the post with IMO
Al

P.S. Fire worms are britsle worms !!!!

Relax. You might strain yourself.

Acutally no.
Besides editing in the link, you & added "IMO".....
Your orginal post could have caused this member to leave it in his tank.

There are many species of Bristle / Fire worms.
Read the same link you supplied.

The Amphinomidae- Amphinoids are also known as "fireworms" and have calcareous setae filled with poisonous secretions. When irritated, they erect their sharp setae which break off at a touch releasing their poisonous contents into the wound. Most species are found on corals, rocks and other hard substrata covered with attached organisms. They swim well and can be brilliantly colored. All but one species can be considered harmless and are great scavengers.

Species shown below : Hermodice carunculata - This is the one species of fireworm that you do not want in your aquarium as it is a known predator of corals.

ok, well, I just started a 12g nano and I decided to place a very light layer of live sand from my 75g FOWLR tank into the nano. Today I purchased a really nice zoa and decided to remove the live sand and keep the tank bare bottom. In the process of removing the live sand (less thank 1/8" high) I discovered this nasty monster. I am assuming that either it came off of the live rock that came from my LFS and found its way into the freshly placed live sand, or it came from my FOWLR tank (contains no corals or inverts) I am praying that it came from the FOWLR tank and if so, if there are any others will be a toy for my triggers and puffers to play with. If it did come from my LFS new live rock, I am sure that I will see one lurking about. Now that there is no live sand in the bottom of the nano, it will be much easier for me to spot. (i hope)
