This year I just completed my home theater in my basement and my reef tank was set up for the last three years never a problem ever since my family has been using it I think the bass is hurting the corals. Its very loud, I have two subs and one is right by my tank, every time we put on a movie the coarls close up and the fish seem to hide more, the home theater is on a concreat floor so I dont know how this would effect the tank?

Do you think its just me or do I need to move my tank?

You probably need to move the tank if the sub is that close. I have a HT in an adjacent room, but I don't listen to it at earth-shaking levels, so my fish and corals don't seem effected. Yours is probably getting a lot of vibration in the water which would freak just about anything out.

Ah, just saw your HT room. Very nice :) If you can get your tank on shock absorbers, you might be okay :P

They don't :) From an audiophile perspective, the electronics on your reef will pollute the power for your audio gear (lots of RF and EMI emitted).

I run a pure av unit to clean the power on my home theater and the whole home theater is on a dedicated circut.

Nice. As long as everything is properly shielded, you shouldn't get any noise. But some aquarium equipment can emit a lot of junk into the power lines and into the ambient air. I had a nano in the same room as my dedicated two channel, and I had to get rid of it because my speakers kept picking up RF from the electronic ballasts ;) Totally separate circuits even!

VERY NICE entertainment center BTW.
I thought my system was pretty good until I saw your pics. Now you've ruined my movie watching. :P

I have noticed my corals are very sensetive to vibrations. When my wife accidently slams the door to the tank room and Im watching, the corals retract their polyps about half way. Im sure a subwoofer would be like this effect 20x over. I hope that your tank adjusts.

cenzo,

Electronic ballast definitely has the potential to effect x-10s. They are heavy polluters :P

Sound different will vibrate molecules in the water, especially low frequency sounds. I doubt fish or corals are used to high levels of bass and I'm sure it freaks them out.

Perhaps he should condition his fish to the surround sound.

Only feed the tank after loud scenes in a movie, they will start to view the bass rumble as a predictor of food, and have a more positive association to it and come into view more often when the bass sound is present!

LOL, undergrad psych students do stuff like this all the time with fish so they can write papers on it.

All your friends will be like, "dude, your fish are really getting into this new action film"!!!

As base is monaural, you can put a subwoofer anywhere in the room and it'll sound fine to people. As such, I'd say move the subwoofer away from the fish tank and you'll get your first big benefit.

ROFLMAO That is hilarious, cruel and cool at the same time. Im sure it would work. For the fish anyway. There is probably no way to get the corals to adjust to it.

Sorry I didnt read this sooner.

That is really wild. The navy is using this top secret sonar that uses bass that can go half way around the world and it kills whales. Interesting parallel.

That's such a bummer, I hope moving it makes things better, you clearly put a lot of time and money into both the tank and theater!

Tested the sound out today seems like both subs are doing this the theater is on a concrete floor so I thought placing it with my home theater would be ok, well dont see any death so it may be ok only time will tell
