I've only had mag floats, but I've often heard about better ones. So what brand and size do you use and how is it working out for you?

Thanks in advance! :D

P.S. This would be for a glass tank between 5/8-3/4" thick. ;)

Algae free hammer head float on 1/2" glass. The tiger shark would be better for 3/4" glass.

I hate my mag float. It sucks! I'd go with something that Wazzel mentioned.

I use a cheapo floating magnet for daily quick cleaning, but I have a very resiliant green algae that forms on my glass and wont come off with that magnet. I now have a Algen Magneet Maxima (http://www.algenmagneetnederland.nl/) for 30mm glass. It doesnt float, but then it never comes apart! Hard work to use but very very effective. Just have to be careful of fingers around it as its pretty dangerous. Oh, and I found out the hard way that credit cards and strong magnets shouldnt sit on the same car seat next to you on the way home from the LFS!

Also using an Algae Free Hammerhead. I get great muscle definition in my arms with this one. When I decide I want to build more muscle mass, I'll try the Tiger Shark.

Seriously, though. The Algae Free magnets get the job done. The pads are easy to replace, and the customer service is great. When my inner magnet stopped floating, Mark sent me a replacement right away.

I love my mag float, it is just perfect on my 65. Best algae magnet I have owned.

I don't like the wicked strong magnets that can take off coralline, just because I have a sandbed and it is too easy to get a piece of sand in there and with a really strong magnet it can seriously scratch glass.

I have a hammerhead magnet as well, for the bigger tank. When I replace the pad I like to get the one that is a size bigger and wrap it around the edges of the magnet. It seems to be able to get to the edges by the silicone better for me that way.

Mine sucks too. I just use a hand scrubber and hope my Foxface Rabbit leaves me alone.

I was just about to order a large glass magfloat (~$19) when I read this. I searched a little online and found scrubbers up to $500+!! I have 1/2" glass and don't want a sorry scrubber, but I don't want to shell out $50+ for a magnet. Has anyone looked into a powerful DYI magnet scrubber?

expensive or cheap magnet, if you get something between it and your glass, you may scratch it. if that is your fear, then i suggest a good old fashioned scraper and exersizing care and precision.
i use mag floats, and an occasional blade, mainly because i'd rather spend the money on inhabitants, than algae magnets.
if your concern is strength, i think if you use the protein skimmer principle (overkill is necessary), you can get a magfloat that will do the job on 1/2 inch glass. apparently, they make one rated for 350 gallon tanks.

I hooked up my CPR skimmer for the first time last week and it's been pulling tons of crap from the tank and I definitely notice a reduction in algae on the glass

After all the things I head about the algae frees, I think I'm sold.
