Where would you put the sanbed, the top level or the lower level. Pleawse look at the pic, notice that my sump has 2 levels. I originally planned to make the upper level a detritus settling area but I worry that detritus will also make its way to the lower level and make the sand med a nutrient sink. Any opinions please

Lower level. If you put it on top, you will never be able to separate the two levels.

Good point. I also have a RDSB about 5 gallons. you think Another DSb in the sump would be overkil with moderate bioload? My system is about 30 gallons total

I am also considering filling the bottom sump with sponges and tunicates. I read that sponges could release antibiotics (especially when dying) that could kill off my nitrifying bacteria. Do sponges require a lot of potential food items floating around?

Most sponges ingest PO4, nitrates, ammonia and silicates. I have sponges all over my tank and sump. I would not worry. Water quality wise I think that they would do more good than harm.

Some are calcareous, so you may need some extra Ca additions.
