I was going to start a poll but figured there are way too many options for that. So, first of all, if you're barebottom or using strictly crushed coral, this doesn't apply to you. But if you use sand, please post what grain size and type of sand you are using and why you chose that route.

Thanks!

I use a mixture of "special grade" Caribsea and their sugar sized sand. It's about a half and half mixture. My sand has yet to stratify, so it still looks very evenly mixed after ~18 months.

I think I have a reef sand that is finer than the sugar size. I don't know the size but it is like dust. it was hard at first but once the tank settled in it is good now. It took a while for the sand to settle when I changed over from CC to sand.

I use a sugar-sized play sand. I bought a 40lb. bag for all of my tanks and it works out well. With one of my past 10 gal. tanks I used a mixture of crushed coral and sugar-sized sand. I figured it to be a 1:4 lb. ratio. This ratio worked out very well for preventing dust clouds due to my Hydor Flo deflector. It never really layered for the months that I had it and I noticed my Rainsford goby really enjoyed it. He sifted what he could and moved what he couldn't.

I would like to point out that although the Rainsford goby did get too big for my tank, it was not the reason for my tank crash. I had moved the goby to a friend's tank soon before I had a power outage which caused me to triage all of my tanks at that time. The 10 gal. was too far gone by the time I had gotten around to it.

I liked the mixed sand and I will definitely use it again.

A Rainsford goby got too big? Don't think you had a Rainsford. The little pod eating striped machine too big? No, you had something else, I beleive.
