How quickly do ricordea polyps reproduce? I'm wondering because I've had problems in the past with mushroom corals spreading like the plague. I got rid of that problem and don't want a repeat. But I like the ricordea polyp. Any chance of it causing the same problem? Thanks!

i have some shrooms that spread quickly, and i have a single tri-colored ricordia that has grown at a terribly slow rate. about 1/4 as fast as the mushroom colonies in my tank. hope that helps.

Yes, that helps. Sounds like a similar situation. I finally had to pull everything out of my display tank and scrape all the mushrooms off the sides 8O . Then I bought some fresh live rock locally and restocked the tank. I sold a ton of the rocks with the mushrooms and moved the biggest pieces down to a propogation tank in my basement so I can continue to get store credit for the ever growing mushrooms.

My display tank looks a lot nicer now w/o the shrooms. I also used less rock and 'scaped it so it looks bigger and the fish have more room to swim.

Thanks again for your experience.

Hey nice setup you got! I like how it started out as a "cheap" low-cost project. Amazing how quickly the bug bites, eh?

Yea, I'll get some pics up soon. I wish I had done a start-to-finish photo doc like you did. Actually, I might have some (started building my setup in '98!). I'll see what I can dig up.

IME Rics don't multiply in plague proportions like Discosoma shrooms can. IMO you'd be fine to add them without worry.

Cool. Thanks! That puts my mind at ease. Those 'shrooms were a real PIA. They're great for trading though. :D

Murphy's rule of reefkeeping, if there's something you want to spread quickly, it won't, if there's something you dont' want to spread quickly it will! :)

Ricordia can be slow growers, by far slower than any of the other standard mushrooms, in my softie tank I have a rock that is completely overrun with those red frilly mushrooms, another overrun with green mushrooms, yet my nice little orange with pink rim ricordias.. ehh they're dividing, but not nearly as fast.

yeap...it's inevitable...the cost i mean. but, so far it's been a fun ride!
i think i'm still in my setup less than most. not the prettiest, but it's working well. i just have to dress up the outer cosmetics, and get a R.O. unit, and i think i am cool.
