I'd aim for a smaller specimen. My tang and angel are both still very small (about 2") and my tank is pretty large, so I think introducing one should be a fairly safe endeavor.

My tangs ignore my blue jaw.

I'd go for it, Len. I'd have one in my reef tank if I had the same appetite for expensive fish that you have. But I prefer to spend my dough on designer corals instead. They are hardier and have some payback down the road. Fish die. They suck like that.

go for it, got a pair in my tank, one of the best fish/decisions I have made with my tank. Lots of color and personality. just watch tiny fish, I think I lost a tiny longfin cardinalfish cause of one of them. FYI most of the specimens available are rather large 6-8" because they are a deepwater fish collectors make it worth it.

Fish don't die in my tank unless something eats it or I boil my water ;) But same thing happened to my corals too :P I like corals but they have absolutely no personality or interaction like that of fish. But it's true: they are better "investments."

Thanks. I was thinking about a pair, but then decided a single juvie might be better. I think I can get small ones, though it might take some time.

What size is your tank? Maybe I can consider a pair, but if it eats my black tang and joculator angel, i'd be POed :P You know, I have no idea if this genus is hermaphroditic or sexed at birth. It would be nice to get two juvies and let them grow up in the tank.

Louey, you still have yours, right? How much did you dish out for him?

I have a trio of blue throats. 2 females and one male. Most skittish fish I have ever seen. I really wish they would calm down. Had them in quarantine for a month or two now and they eat fine but holy moly, look at them wrong and they try jumping out of the tank. I know if I tank them in my 180 I will never see them again.

Yes, I still have my blue jaw. I think I paid $40 or $50 at my LFS. Cheap fish.

Mine swims around high in the water column all the time. Not shy at all. Bold, if anything.

Every single one I have ever brought in acted the same as these three do now. If they don't see me, I see them roaming around. But if I am in front of the tank, even for feeding, they go ballastic.

When I had an office outside the house I had one in a 140 g tank. He ate the shrimp and some crabs but never nipped the corals. It did do a little damage at night when it would lock itself in to sleep but nothing major.

Damn. As soon as I posted the above, I looked at my tank and didn't see my bluejaw (or blue throat). Upon further review, I found him in the overflow.

Damn. What are the odds he'll jump back into the tank?

Bummer.

See what I mean now Len? I've never had a coral jump into the overflow (or on the floor, like my Scotts Fairy Wrasse did about a month ago).

But I've never had fish fall behind the rocks and die because they couldn't get back out ;)

So, I deduce that I should have glued the blue jaw in place better. :P
