After reading this article http://www.wetwebmedia.com/growingcorals.htm by Calfo, I'm taken back by some of things he mentioned about fish food. One thing was clear in my head: frozen foods should stay frozen, and liquid foods should stay in fridge. But never thought to put my flakes in the fridge, as well.

Two problems: I keep my flakes, freeze dried, and seaweed atop my light "rack" which is a piece of flat wood that makes a shelf on top; And I've had my flakes and freeze dried foods since I setup my tank almost a year ago! 8O Somehow, I never thought about it.

How about you?? Where and how do you store your foods (flakes, liquid, live, frozen, and algae) and how long do you keep them for?

Frozen in the freezer, all in the little tupperware. I have a bottle of selcon in the fridge.

Flakes stay on the top shelf of the closet next to my tank. Maybe they will retain vitamins better in the fridge, but I wouldn't feed the tank as much as I should if the flake food was so far from the tank. My Midas blenny gets skinny if he doesn't eat often.

frozen in the freezer, phyto in fridge, and flake and pellet style foods on the kitchen counter nearest the tank. according to this article, the massive can of flake food i have is about worthless(about a year old now).
what puzzles me is, if smoked or dehydrated meat keeps nutrients(jerkey and such), why doesn't dehydrated fish food? i'm skeptical about this information.
i believe it would depend on the process in which they(flakes, pellets) were prepared. i have googled "nutrient dehydrated meats" and everything i read said that if done correctly, you won't lose much of anything.
here is a company that sells dehydrated foods for human consumption:

just some "food for thought"

My flakes are in a sealed plastic container, don't know how the humidity is going to affect that at all.

Read your link and you'll know why :D Once you open a can of flake, you let air in and moisture. Both limit shelflife. Fish food is also not dehydrated in the same sense and is very prone to degration. This is why almost all fish food has ethoxyquin in it.

well..i don't know how "sealed" the flake-food container is....it's not like it has a rubber gasket at the threads or anything.
and as for the fact that fishfood not being dehydrated the same way human food is- do we know this? what corners are cut? i mean..all you are doing is heating it. they are using non-food grade heat? they are heating it less? hmm...i would really like to go to a processing plant and check this out. :?

Flake food is dehydrated the same as human food(FDA monitors Animal products just as strigently as human products), and will keep as long, HOWEVER, degradation starts to occur the first time you open the container- everytime you do, you add more moisture and bacteria to the flakes.
