I've decided to set up the 210 gallon as a FOWLR tank. The neighborhood kids love to come over and see it and they're more interested in looking at the cool fish as opposed to some type of coral. Plus, I would much rather spend time with the 2-year-old daughter than to be messing with strict water parameters..blah..blah..blah.

Anyhow...

I purchased a clown trigger to go in the tank. He did great...was swimming around, pecking at rocks, eating food, finding hiding places to sleep. So far, there's only a couple of clown fish, so there wasn't much for him to be scared of.

The fish was awesome looking (notice how I said "was").

Later that day, I found him stuck on a powerhead. I shut down all of the high-flow powerheads, but left a couple of MJ1200s on for circulation.

$50 and 4 hours later....dead fish.

Sometimes I hate this hobby!!

Sorry to hear that :( I'm having some issues with my tank right now. It seems when it rains, it pours. But I know better days are to come.

Could he have been a bit sick to begin with? It seems like a strong, healthy fish could pull away from the suction.

But, it is much worse to lose a fish that you have had for a while, named and consider a family pet.

If the suction is that strong to pull in a healthy fish, I know a cool trick to fix it, if you need it....Works even for tiny dwarf seahorses and doesn't slow the flow...

Sorry to hear about your trigger,

How would you reduce the suction Seahorsewhisperer?

Let me see if I can explain it?

Suction force can be spread out over a larger area, so the pull in any given spot is reduced. A PH with a small inlet has much stronger pull than one with a larger surface area at it's inlet. The PSI is lessened by a larger area.

I had a drilled 20H for my tiny seahorses. The overflow was only 3/4 inch, covering it with bridal veil would keep the fry in the tank, but clogged up against the netting. I made this dodad out of plastic mesh, using just a few rubber bands and some fishing line. The fry could actually hitch on the overflow and catch food as it went through the mesh without getting pulled in.

A temporary cover for a powerhead can be made to encase the lower part without obstructing flow in or out using the same principle and the same materials.

Make sense?

I'm better now.......

Whenever I help someone set up a new system, the first thing I tell them before they buy their first piece of equipment is to always remember that "FISH DIE!!! -- GET USED TO IT!!!"

You can't take it personally.

Thanks for everyone's support.

Seahorse, gotcha, thanks. Your little dodad looks neat though.
