I have replumbed and relocated my 155 bowfront reef and now realize how loud my pumps are. The previous setup was on an external wall and the pumps were outside, but now with everything moving inside noise has become an issue.

The two pumps I need to replace are a Iwaki WMD-40RLT and WMD-40RLXT. One is the main pump to my tank, which runs the sump etc. and the other is a pressure rated pump that runs my closed loop.

The main pump is rated for 1020 GPH at 6 feet and the CL pump is rated at 690 GPH at 6 feet.

I really want to get a good pump, maybe even with higher GPH ratings, but that are as quite as possible.

Any suggestions?

I have had terrible luck finding quiet external pumps, so I won't be much help there. I run GenX Mak4s, which are bullet proof pumps, but they are pretty loud.

The only suggestion I have is that you could get an quiet internal powerhead (like a tunze or vortech) that could move way more water than 690 gph, that way you might be able to eliminate the closed-loop pump altogether.

Marcus, have you tried sequence pumps? Particularly the Reeflo Dart? Everyone I've met seems to be extremely happy with theirs! :) I have one that is in the closet waiting for the tank to be filled. ;)

So, my recommendation would be the Dart. :D

I had a large sequence pump fail. The seal ruptured and caused a massive flood in my basement. Good thing that I had a basement fish room and that I was home at the time. It could have been a lot worse.
I have heard good things about Sequence pumps, but when an expensive piece of equipment fails on you in a short amount of time, you don't tend to recommend them.

But I hope your's performs splendidly :P

Does anyone have experience with QuietOne pumps? I plan to get one and keep it in my sump. One model gets about 750+ gph at 4ft head which would be plenty for my 55 gallon setup. I'm assuming mine will be fairly quiet since it will be in water, but I'd like to know if anyone had experience with these.

Thanks.

Well, for in water, I would recommend a mag 9, which should give you the same amount of flow. I like the mag pumps. They are fairly quiet internally but do give off a little heat. ;)

well i liked quietone since i found it very cheap ($60), but it seems that mag ones are a golden standard.

Have you thought about Eheim pumps specifically the 1262 or 1260?

I use the 1262 as my return for my 120g, it replaced out a Quiet One 4000 - definitely more noticeble flow.

I use a Beckett "Medium Pond Pump" as my external pump. Wacky pipe fittings, and I had to take off the screen to get to the intake fitting, and "lube" the O-ring seal with aquarium sealant, but it was cheap ($70 at Home Depot), and dead silent.

550GPH at 4 ft head + 2 DIY eductors = massive flow in my 55G.

It's also a vortex pump, so it won't clog as often on hair or algae.

(It's rated to pass solids up to 1/4" !)

I expect it to fail from saltwater corrosion within the year, so I'm looking for a saltwater-resistant model. Until then, this quiet little pump will keep on keeping on.

I use a blueline 150PS on my 150. It is not to loud, sounds like a fan running. The clip on fan I have is louder.

can't u run the mag pumps externally? I have mine in sump, but it seems quiet, and there isn't much to go wrong with it.

Yes you can. I ran 3 external for a few years. They have been known to leak around the housing seal tho. I never had issues, but others have.

Just put the pump in a shallow container, with a venturi line to a powerhead in your sump. That way if there is a small leak, it'll get sucked into the sump.

Or, if you have pre-filters and don't have to worry about sand or fish, most magnetic drive pumps can be sealed up with Aquarium sealant (use it like grease around the O-ring, and let it cure for 24-hours after reassembly) - but you lose the ability to repair the impeller.
