Passive tang is an oxymoron. I have found, however, that Paracanthurus hepatus, or regal tang, is fairly non-agressive.

In general, Ctenochaetus spp. tangs are the least aggressive. No tangs are passive. ;) I like Tomini tangs for a lot of reasons. They're beautiful, relatively peaceful, and are damn hardy IME.

If you ever get a chance to go to Atlantis Marine World in NY you can watch tons of different tangs interact. The hippo's/regals are by fair the gnarlest fighters in that HUGE tank. I watched them fight for over 20 minutes :D

You can see it in downtown SF too. :D We have 3 or 4 adult P. hepatus in a 20k tank and they are not happy with each other one bit. The tiny juveniles seem to get along just fine, it's the adults that are aggressive.

On the flip side, we have 11 (or 12?) Ctenochaetus tominiensis in a range of sizes in the same tank that get along much better.

No! No, no, no! I do it on purpose so folks will learn latin names. You know what a Xenia, Acropora, Favia, and Tubastraea are, right?

Now, if I just said "blue tang"...you know how many different blue tangs there are? Well, okay, I don't either, but at least 3.

An easy place to look them up, by the way:

Our toy poodle is getting a bit of an attitude, I've officially described him as Pseudonanopoopus curmudgeoni, not to be confused with the true Nanopoopus genus which our Daisy belongs to...Nanopoopus tinkleri. (she still pees a lot)
