You just need to find where they're coming from. Are they residual bubbles from the skimmer getting pumped back up via the return? Is your sump full of bubbles as well?

i shut everything off. not bubbles it looks like residue, tiny pieces of sediment or sand. i just put a new micro filter pad in my canister, i will see if that works. skimmer is flowing through the fuge and then into the sump. i shut the skimmer off and i still had the residue. could i have to much flow causing the sand to be stirred up all the time.

Hey Waymack, sorry, I forgot about this thread.

So you found that it's not microbubbles but instead "tiny pieces of sediment or sand"? These will always be present in a reef aquarium and are beneficial. But too much particulate looks bad so there are some things you can do to cut down on it.

First, you can try a 100 micron filter sock in your sump. This will filter most of it out. It will also filter good stuff like zooplankton. Most people use them on and off, a week on a week off, etc.

Ozone and carbon also cut down on particulate, as will a good skimmer.

Lastly, if it's a new tank or you've added new sand, then there will be excess particulate for a few weeks.
