Your tang's growth rate

I'm curious how fast people's tangs grow in their systems. I always hear conflicting reports; For example, some people say their Nasos grow slowly while others say they grow fast. I've had Zebrasoma that didn't seem to want to ever grow (even though it ate heartily) but my current specimen is growing at a very good pace.

My tangs have always grown pretty fast, at least in my opinion.

For example, my atlantic blue grew from 2-3" to 5-6" in two - three years. That seems fast too me. If it contunues at this pace, it'll be 8-9" and in another couple of years.

My blue hippos grew from 3/4" to 2" in 6 months. My yellow didn't grow as fast from 1-1/2" to 2" in 6 months.

I find it pretty hard to tell. My Yellow Tang still looks small to me and I've had him 9 years.

Len, surgeons in general are one of those families that don't reach full adult size in most tanks. Most people don't realize that their yellow tang or Hippo tang get's the size of a small dinner plate in the wild. In a similar fashion to angels, they'll grow to a certain size, (depending on system size, feeding regime and water quality) and slow way down, for all intents and purposes stopping. Getting a handle on growth rate through a poll is futile really, and the best you can hope to get is a trend with various genera.

I had a 8" Naso lituratus in a 135 for several years, and it didn't even put on an inch. On the other hand I also purchased a 2" individual for another system and it grew to 5" in roughly the same period of time. Again, once a certain size is reached in most systems, growth slows considerably. Now if my system was 600 gallons, I'm sure that 8" specimen would have easily put on an inch or two at least in that time.

Just too many variables. Zebrasomas though in general can be counted on to stay realatively small regardless of documented adult size.

Nothing is all the time...I'm speaking in generalities. Z. desjardinii often bucks what I just said.

I know this doesn't help much.

Sorry for the quality of the pictures, but my Z. veliferum went from about 2.5" long to about 4.5" in 10 months or so.

I went from clearly visible, entirely too many scratches with lots of diatoms to still entirely too many scratches, but for some reason not as clearly visible, and lots of coraline that needs be cleaned up!

my sailfin(zebrasoma veliferum) has stretched about 2 inches in about 5 months as well.
my clown tang (acanthurus lineatus) has grown 1 inch in the same period.
baby regal tang- 1 half inch in 1 month :lol:

In my 125, ny hepatus went from 3" to 5" in a couple of years. My Red sea sailfin has grown 1" in a year from 3 to 4.

I actually spaced as was thinking of another fish when I first replied in that other thread. Powder Browns are a bad idea in general, but I posted there for you.

I'll be adding a 3" Naso elegans shortly (to eat my caulerpa). If it levels off about 8-10", I'll be happy My previous Zebrasoma rostratum never really grew, but the current one has more then doubled its size in a year. I feed my new tank a lot more, so I wonder if diet might be a more determining criteria for growth then tank size.
