You have to take it apart, on mine there are lights indicating when it is time to change the bulb. You should change the bulbs every six months. That is what i am doing. Hope that is help if that is what you mean by burnt.

Thank you lfc 5 times,
I'll take it apart tonight and see. The book only gives instructions on how to replace it. It ran 24/7 all last summer, so possibly it's burnt.

I'll let you know after tonight.

Don't look at the bulb if it is on, unless you have a bad case of eye infection and want to burn your eye balls at the same time...

You are supposed to keep them on 24/7. If you don't the unit will not be able to keep ontop of the parasites. Mine is in all the time, if this is the case just purchase a new bulb from your LFS and you will be fine. They are dead easy to change.

I would never be able to know if the UV was burnt out on mine without taking it apart. I did have a problem with mine because the pump that feeds it wasn't powerful enough to pump up to my tank and there was no flow going through the sterilizer. I could tell the light was still on but I tok it apart and the bulb was cracked but it still had light.
I believe they are rated for 6 months or so. Not sure what they look like after that I took mine off my system.

Mine has a light on the side, When you start up the unit you shine a LED whish comes wirth it into a sensor on the side. This must activates a count down timer to let you know when the bulb needs changing. This is useful when you have a mind like a siv.

I found info on the manufaturer's site, they say to replace the bulb and chamber once a year. Also to clean the quartz reactor. So Now I have to find a local store to get the bulb.

Thank you all for the answers.
