turboflotr 1000 vs HSA MTC 250

I got a 90 gal. Planning to have large bio load and some corals. Softies primarily.

I can get the turboflotr for 125 with pump. I can get mtv 250 with mag 5 and waste runoff box for 250. Plz help.

The TurboFLOTR 1000 is 125 with the pump and everything included.


The MTC NOT (MTV) that was my bad.. It is a MTC - Marine Technical Concepts HSA MTC 250 Skimmer its for 250

It comes with

Skimmer,External Waste Return Container Thingy, and a Mag Pump to power it.


The dude will also throw in a Icecap Ballast 660 Retrofit 48" VHO fixture for a Total of 325 - I get the MTC skimmer and the VHO fixture. I can always buy the VHO fixture for 75 bucks though.l

Honestly I asked this question before about the skimmers but there are so many out there with varying prices. Some look sturdier than others rated Impossibly high. All in all unless im doing a 180 gallon aquarium it seems that my optimal skimmer should fall in the price range of below 200 dollars...

I had the MTC 250 before, and it was a decent skimmer, but I didn't think it performed as well as I would've liked. Very well built; it is much better built then the TF, but it skimmed no better IMHO. However, at the asking price (with all the accessories), the MTC might be worth getting.

yeah im just afraid that the MTC is just overpriced junk. I agree that it looks better built and simplier/sturdier than the Turboflotr but as far as I'm concerned I'm bending towards the turboflotr because of the reviews that have come about because of it. the turboflotr is rated for a tank up to 200 gallons and comes in a smaller footprint. Its also great because its constantly recirculating the water. if you look at my tank build thread thread then i think it will operate better than the mtc.

It's definitely not junk, and it might not be considered overpriced for the quality of material and build you get. It simply didn't skim as well as I was hoping for. Maybe I had high expectations (since it is a beckett skimmer). The TF is a proven design. The construction is pretty poor, to be honest, but the performance is very good.

I think Right now I'm leading toward the turboflotor 1000. Its cheap, comes from a trusted LFS that i buy just about everything from, and it does not seem to be too bad at all. The MTC seems like a well built skimmer but like you said before it seems to be well built but capable of only what its rated for and nothing more. I think I will go with the turbo flotr from Aqua Medic.
