I'm toying with the idea of a small eel with conical teeth (those that don't hunt fish very effectively). But I like my shrimps a lot and don't want them to fall prey to the eel. Has anyone tried any small eels with shrimps and crabs?

I kept a Pseudechidna brummeri with two large Lysmata that it ate. It'd be hard to find an eel smaller than that one full grown.

Len, eels with that sort of dentition usually specialize in hunting shelled inverts, and they are very adroit at it.

In case it matters, this is empirical data working for you as well, and not just theory. I used to be really into keeping those morays, and spent many hours watching them do their thing.

There's not much in this hobby that really freaks me out more than eels....

Yuck!!!

I have no idea why.

But even when I go to the LFS and they have an eel tank......I steer clear of it.

Yuck!!!!

I'm a big fat sissy!!

I have a snowflake eel and it doesn't care for my blood shrimp. Although one time I bought a bunch of peppermint shrimps to feed my lionfish but the snowflake ended up eating most of them. For some reason he went in hunting mode and went searching for those shrimp. I still have my blood shrimp though

my guess is that once the moray matures the risk gets higher of losing your ornamental shrimp. That's just a guess though

Not that I am an expert, but on my last dive trip every moray we say had shrimp climbing all over them. The eel did not look intetrested in eating them. The ones I was were the green and black moray. I know limited experience.

This is normal behavior where cleaner species are concerned, and piscivorus morays don't always bother shrimp anyway.

I swear there was a thread in the member's tank section that the user had combined all sorts of livestock in his reef tank. I know an eel and fish were part of it and I believe shrimp were included as well. But I can't find that thread for the life of me! :( :?

My snowflake ate all my shrimp. One was funny, kind of. It was letting the cleaner clean, but when the shrimp was done, the snowflake ate him.
