They do this on occasion. It is usually done when they are about to die.....or reproduce. Hopefully the later.

Or if you bother them (move rocks, lighting changes, flow changes) they can move to find a 'happier' place. They can close up and become pretty small so they might be in a crevice that you can't see. Just be careful because they can end wandering to a lot of places you do want them to! :)

That's generally not a really good sign if they disappear on you. They will often times move away from the light if they're stressed or dying. It takes awhile for them to fade into nothing, so he's probably in there somewhere, though. How big was he to start? If he's gone someplace to die on you, it can seriously tax your biological filtration, so keep a very close eye on your ammonia levels.
Tell us a little about your tank as well. How long have you had it running, what are you using for lighting, what are your water parameters, etc.? BTAs are one of the easier anemones to keep, but all anemones can be tricky. I struggled with mine close to a year before I could say that it was actually doing well.

Oh, check your sump and powerheads as well. They tend to like water flow and will often times wander too close to an inlet or powerhead and get sucked in.

i just bought him from the local fish store. so matbe he just has not found a place he likes. i have 3 250 watt halides and 2 96 watt actinics on a 180 gallon tank wit sump/fuge and a modded 1200 maxi jet and 2 aqua clear 70 powerheads i am adding a uv filter tonight. have only had tank running for 2 months all water peramaters are fine except for some stupid alge blooms. will look harder for him in the morning.

It's hard to tell the difference if it is dying or splitting because they look very similar. Moving her may just lead to her demise if she were splitting.

If he's turned inside out, that doesn't sound like he's splitting to me. Of course, I've only seen a split 3 times on 2 anemones, so I could be wrong.

It sounds like your lighting is good. You may want to actually post your water parameters. Fine can mean different things to different people and for different animals.

Is he not attaching himself to the rocks anymore? Moving him to a hospital tank is a little bit of a judgement call. On the good side, if he does die, he won't pollute your tank. On the bad side, you're going to have a harder time meeting water quality and lighting requirements in the hospital tank unless you have a really nice setup.

Sorry to hear that. Anemones are tough, I don't care what anyone says. The survival statistics of anemones in captivity speak for themselves. Until we really nail down the proper husbandry techniques for anemones, I don't see myself ever getting another one. I've managed to keep my BTA alive for about a year and a half, but I have to say the entire first year was a constant struggle.

Yeah, I bet the stress of the moves was just too much for the anemone. I know they're not always the best shippers. I'm glad you've had better overall success with anemones than I have. Mine's looking great now. . .both of them, it just recently split. Of course, they've both taken up residence on the back side of a rock, so you can barely see them.
