Just a comment here. did my water change and siphoned the cyano up. Just making some water temp readings and and they are reading 89-90. could this be a problem or helping the diatom and cyano. Without buying a chiller is there something I can do to drop the temp? I did not have this problem before due to had compact lighting now went to the T5 lighiting 460Watts.

If your temp is that high you could be getting some die off of small organisms which could very well cause the bloom. I'm not sure about the growth rate of cyanobacteria at various temperatures, but I suppose it is possible that it does better at higher temps. Either way, you definitely need to get your temp down to around 82 degrees max. Most organisms can handle a little higher than this, but it's better to play on the safe side. Some people prefer to shoot for around 80 degrees max or even less. I like the $7 clip on mini fans from Wal-mart. If you have room to put them in the back of your canopy, they move a lot of air and usually last for several years. Eventually the motor rusts up and you have to get a new one. I have multiple halides on my system and these still do the trick.

I run a small clip-on fan that blows over my sump. I can cool the temp by 4-5 degrees through evaporation. Be prepared to add a lot more freshwater to your tank if you do this method. My tank top is completely exposed as well.
