I use 25 micron socks apparently developed for hot tubs or something. I get them at the LFS. My goal is to change them every 2-3 days. I wash them with bleach in the washing mahine.

I'm surprised more people don't use monofilament nylon filter socks. They are much much easier to turn inside out and clean than the fluffy felt type polypropylene filter socks that I see on most setups. The cost, micron sizes offered, and functionality are virtually the same. The only downside is that they will rip a bit easier if they are snagged on a rock, but this is easily preventable.

For small sumps and such, Polyweld nylon filter bags are also much easier to clean and use than the felt type polypropylene filter bags.

I use 300 micron nylon socks...it catches the larger stuff that might get into the over flow..i change them out every 3-4 days or so and go on a pod rescue mission everytime...

i use 200 micron filter socks with a 7 inch ring. easy to turn inside out, and shake out the pods/snails, then into the washing machine without soap.

i rotate them about every 3 or 4 days. i've had these since the beginning of this tank...what has it been....4 months now? they are starting to look a little thin.

Agreed - I like nylon better too.

I like these too. As you say, however, they only seem good on small setups as they can't (IME) handle much of a flow rate...

I notice a huge difference when I am not running a filter sock. Normally, I only use it for storming but it makes a difference to run it all the time. But since I have a hard time keeping up with the cleaning every couple of days, I go a while without it and quickly remember how much better it is with it on. Particles everywhere without it. :)

My wifes nylons work very well especially when she is not in them. Stretch them a bit to find a good "capture/flow through rate". Beware of clogs that can happen very fast especially after maintenance causing an overflow.
