Is there a site or thread that explains a lot of the abbreviations that you fine folk use? I understand some but if you could help me out especially with some of the more commonly used ones.... or even ... well all of em too!

edit: now I know: Hydrargyrum quartz iodide (HQI) is a special type of high-intensity discharge (or HID) lighting, where the light is produced using a very high voltage electrical arc through a gas. .... wikipedia so it is gospel.

HQI is Hydrargyrum/Halogen Quartz Iodide. I believe it is patented by Philips. It's a variation on halide lighting, and most bulbs/ballasts termed HQI aren't really true HQI. HQI is now used interchangeably (albeit incorrectly) with double-ended halide bulbs.
