hey sm it seems someone else is trying an ats incorportating your technique into a bigger design and indicated he hopes to be skimmerless, he even references your build threads on reef central and marine depot forums, in fact he got no criticism like you have been getting here. i wonder if he would get flamed on reefs.org like you do from all the 'experts' ?

Lets cut the hyperbole - SM got the same kind criticism he got here on just about every forum he posted on.

it is an algae turf scrubber. the idea is that algae will export PO4 and nitrates. the middle is filled with Chaetomorpha.

there is a lone pipe fish living in the rock work in the tank.

here is a bit of the algae that i will try to cultivate. it is growing out of the water in the outside tank in the splash zone.

here it is in action-

miwoodar, not only did bruce davidson run an ats skimmerless for years, apparently eric borneman has had very successful sps reef tanks with no skimmers and little or no water changes, and heavy feeding using an ats. i'm sure there are more out there.
Sigh, I cant picture that in my living room

true except marine depot forums where he got nothing but encouragement. i was mainly referring to the other guy who got no criticism at all and based his ats on sm's waterfall type design on rc, seems like an interesting design no? time will tell if it works as he anticipates.

blackcloudmedia, that is in his fish room which is the basement, not his living room, i wouldn't keep my gigantic volcano skimmer in my living room either

Well I do have to say if the ATS WAS the industry standard and huge scrubbers like this were required to run tanks over 75 gallons.....and the protein skimmer was offered as an alternative....Id take the skimmer. Less work, less size, less construction, from the looks of materials less cost,..etc. I havent read the threads from this other guy but he probably took a more humble route to presenting his expiriment than SM did. If SM would have come on here and said "hey guys look I made a compact ATS and its removing a lot of stuff" we probably would have been like..."oh cool."

I gotta admit, I was a tad surprised when I saw reefski building that thing. I'll give it a year before he throws it in the garbage.

water hyacinth do a far better job, and are far prettier to look at

Please source quotes if you want them to hold ground. For instance: President Bush "I like protein skimmers"

Not hard to do if you plug it into a search engine.

Conclusion from that same article:

"Scrubbers are good for cycling, but I think they will only help and should be used in ocnjunction with water changes, skmming, and any other potential mechanism to keep ammonia at non-toxic levels to preserve whatever little life is present in these initial tank phases. Making sure there is some significant amount of estabished rock, sand, or rubble will also help as you get the bacterial diversity present and able to jump quickly into logarhythmic growth (bacteria starter products have a fraction of viable bacteria compared to a handful of live sand)."

This again, smacks of being disingenuous - the picking and choosing what supports a particular position while ignoring the rest.

Its also interesting to see Bob chiming in on the MD forum. Not only did he also seem to misunderstand what others were saying about the panacea he was offering, its amazing to see him now saying he is a newbie to corals when before he was presenting himself as an expert.
