So what are people opinions on Zeovit these days? The method makes sence to me, but I am far from sold. I ask because the pictures I see online are amazing. However I have never seen a Zeo tank in person. Everything seems pricey and too good to be true. Thanks.

Seems too good to be true...bet people used to say that about protein skimmers and metal halide lighting to. I want to see a tank in person before I totally close my mind to it.

I think it works as well as any system you commit to. A low nutrient system adding food to feed the corals, will work as will my other systems. A lot of people do some zeo additives but not the whole thing with the rocks.

prodibio is nice...if you don't want to dabble in zeovit.

but zeo is nice. i've seen a few tanks that use it and i was blown away.

Protein skimmer was used in waste water processing before adopted by the reef, while high intensity lighting was used in hydroponic community. Who used zeolit and test its claims? I am pretty open mind about this.

Bacteria have been used in waste water treatment for years... The zeolite is not very important, just a media to cultivate the bacteria.

Vitamins, amino acids, and trace elements must be re-added as they are utilized via respiration and functions of the bacteria you grow from adding a carbon source.

you need to skew environmental and competitive factors. carbon alone wont do this. Vodka is indiscriminate and will grow any bacteria that can utilize it... not necessarily the ones we want as hobbyists.

basic bio/bac primers will cover this, and although largely marketing the zeoguide will also help.

Do you have any references to any controlled scientific studies that demonstate this in a reef tank? I don't doubt you, this is just the first I've heard of this. As you probably are well aware, you have to be skeptical in this hobby with all the "snake oil" that is out there.

I am not completely sure what you want demonstrated and what part you are calling snake oil...? Dosing just Vodka has some very serious flaws, the major one being a single C-Source IMO.

There are no scientific studies on anything related to our reef tanks directly that I am aware of. Most of the "controlled" studies I've come across related to the hobby are far from controlled and far from scientific... JMO :lol:

Any primer on bacteria should cover this... There are numerous studies showing the rate of trace elements and amino acids usage by bacteria... but without understanding the basics I wouldn't think they are of much use.

Some quick searches on google scholar should pull up plenty to keep most busy with reading for a few days.
