i'm just getting back into reef keeping after several years off. i've been moving a lot for the past 10 years and haven't been able to set up an expensive reef tank or even a large salt water fish tank for a very long time. i'll be in a new house this year and plan on setting up a tank of at least 120 gallons right away. i would like to know what everybody's opinion is of these online shops. i just spent an hour going over saltwaterfish.com. they're in florida and i'm in the philadelphia area. what's the quality like from these companies and more important what's the survival rate like. i'm from the old days where you ran from your local fish store at a frantic pace to get your new buy into the tank.

Personally, I still rely on LFS and don't use on-line resellers for live stock but I will buy dry goods from them.

I live in the Bay Area and get a lot of stuff from fellow reefers in swaps but I buy fish and the odd coral from the LFS that has been the most helpful to me through the years.

I have had good luck with saltwaterfish.com in the past (Cincinnati, OH). Well packed, good price, good communication.

That being said, I have started to rely heavily on local shops. I am on good enough terms with most of them that they will hold items for me, feed fish so I can see them eat, and it is great to actually be able to see the specimen that you are buying.

So, if you want to order on line, go for it!

I've heard mixed opinions about Saltwaterfish.com. I've only had one experience personally, and the fish I received was rather malnourished. It died about a month or so later. I blamed myself at the time, so I didn't try to get a refund. Overall, they're probably not bad, though. About the only online store I seem to hear very consistent good reviews about is Liveaquaria.com. I have a friend who really likes Phishybusiness.com, but two of the fish I received from them died within a week (the first was all but dead on arrival from malnutrition). On the plus side, they did seem to be honestly concerned about the deaths. They actually put a hold on all sales of the fish that was malnourished until they were sure there were no others in similar condition. I actually went back and checked their website, and sure enough, they took them off for a few days.

I have only bought fish from Saltwaterfish.com and LFS. I thought they had packed everything verywell. and everything looked good. I live in Minnesota. But it was summer when I bought from them so I don't know how it would be in the winter.

Don't know about saltwaterfish.com but can recommend 2 LFS that you might want to check out.

The Hidden Reef (http://www.thehiddenreef.com) in Levittown, PA. Haven't been in a while but remember that they had a decent selection of stuff.

And That Fish Place (http://www.thatpetplace.com/) in Lancaster, PA. A little more of a hike but a really cool place. I've also had stuff shipped from them with no complaints.

Might save ya some on shipping
